Bestowed with the kind of crystalline voice that makes an
Alpine stream appear double-murky, Peggy Honeywell (aka Clare
Rojas) has been at the forefront of alt.country since it
appeared blinking from Galaxia's ample bosom - with 'Faint
Humms' her second full-length. Dripping with a self-assurance
that never becomes cocky, Honeywell has eschewed the stellar
production unit of last album 'Honey For Dinner' in favour of
a stripped down approach that sees her, a guitar, some banjo
and the occasional shake of a tambourine getting chatty for
your listening pleasure. Positioned at the nub where Chan
Marshall, Loretta Lynn and Beth Orton collide, Honeywell opens
'Faint Humms' with the gorgeous 'Peach And Yellow' - wherein a
tantalisingly hollow guitar part finds itself subject to the
kind of emotional onslaught by a lovelorn Honeywell that would
have a full-fat double bass buckling. From here we're ushered
immediately into the dusty environs of 'R.R.V', a place where
Honeywell allows a pop-fed melody to get in the way of any
austere notions; an approach which gives birth to a witty,
catchy and fantastically pithy mediation on unwanted
separation. Pass me a tissue... Elsewhere, 'Faint' lives up to
the album title through a drifting cloud of melodious humming,
'Drama King' gets Haiku on your ass with a bass-laden
composition, whilst 'Humms' does exactly what it says on the
tin. Very well. Sweet like honey!
