You don't have to ask Neil Young if he's passionate. The guy
has made a nearly 40-year career out of pursuing only the
music he wants to make, often at the expense of his
commercial standing and his relationship with his record
company. He's been a man ruled by his muse, which has taken
him from the rocking crunch of Crazy Horse to the mellow
fields of Harvest to forays into techno, rockabilly, blues,
and other forms. Now, on Are You Passionate?, we get Neil
Young, soul man.Though it started life as a Crazy Horse
album -- and retains one track from those sessions, the
tomahawk-chopping "Goin' Home" -- the final version of Are
You Passionate? is informed by players like Stax organist
Booker T. Jones and his MG's bandmates Donald "Duck" Dunn on
bass and Steve Potts on drums. (Crazy Horse guitarist Frank
"Pancho" Sampedro is also on hand for the whole album.) The
rest of the album has a relaxed, soulful kind of groove,
from the direct Stax rhythm lifts of "You're My Girl,"
"Differently," and "Be With You" to the subtle textures of
"She's a Healer," "Mr. Disappointment," and "Two Old
Friends." Even "Let's Roll," Young's highly publicized paean
to the heroic September 11 passengers on Flight 93, has a
kind of chug that's made funkier by this particular rhythm
section than it probably would have been in the hands of
other players. And even though Young laces plenty of
signature guitar riffs throughout, Are You Passionate? is
for those who appreciate his songwriting as much as if not
more than the histrionic fireworks he creates with Crazy
Horse. This is an album of sentimental loves songs and, in
"You're My Girl," a father's gentle ode to his growing
daughter. "Two Old Friends," meanwhile, depicts a discussion
between a preacher and God. Elsewhere, during "When I Hold
You in My Arms," Young notes that "The older generation/They
got something to say/But they better say it fast, or get
outta the way." Fortunately for us, Young's not heeding that
advice but rather takes his own time saying -- and playing
-- things that are well worth hearing.
