Release Notes:

Cyro Baptista's Beat the Donkey is a percussion and
dance ensemble-- I've not heard their previous
record, but picked up "Love the Donkey" when it was
released as I've really grown to love Baptista's
work in the past couple years.

One thing I can safely say is that it's clear this
ensemble would be absolutely stunning live. But
this is a record, so I'll talk a bit to it.
Baptista and his band (seven percussionists in
addition to himself) whip up a rather aggressive
stew of multi-cultured music. Nothing seems to be
left out, from Brazil to Jamaica to Irish to tap to
Led Zeppelin. Boundaries between different musics
are broken down and seemlessly integrated into the
pieces. Standout pieces include opener "American
Constitution" (excitable percussion and Baptista
shouting into a megaphone), "Bottles" (the ensemble
blowing on, yes, bottles, several of them), the
totally off-the-wall didgeridoo meets dub workout
"Matan" and Irish-ish "Maria Teresa" (a great
spotlight for guest performer, violinist Mark
Feldman).

It's a lot of fun, but back to my point about
seeing this live-- it feels like a picture of the
sort of energy that would be captured were this a
performance. It's a good record, but it'd be a lot
better if you were immersed in it.
