Release Notes:
sissy spacek has been art-rocking around the Helsinki scene since fall '96.
Convincing and hypnotic live-performances and a unique brand of music have
created a strong cult following for the band across Finland.
Until recently the band has called it's music "limping ambient art rock." The
description is, however, pretty vague, since the band has also been compared to
anything from Sonic Youth to Brian Eno. Some even hear echos of The Cure-esque
gothism in the music of sissy spacek. The only static element through which the
music defines itself is the combination of northern melancholy and yearing into
pure colorist playing and heartbreaking vocals, and bringing this all together
into a neat package of pop/rock.
The nucleus of sissy spacek is formed by Ilai and Tommi, whose vision stears the
band's musical vision ahead. Ilai as the vocalist and guitarist writes the
songs, that Tommi's (former bassist, current drummer, producer!) unlimited
foresight binds together. Both of them are also known from the avant-gardist
noise-rock sensation Echo Is Your Love. A unique addition to the mix has been
former drummer Tumppi, who has since dropped out of the band. Tommi has switched
to drums and the new bass player was found from the recently disbanded, already
legendary Finnish Brit-pop band the Pansies. Sissy spacek always innovatively
returned to the situation of "Three sissies playing spacey music."
