gently rolling breakbeats, classy piano and affecting vocals make
for another winner from this former stereo mcs singer. "tell me"
is a hypermodern ballad that balances singer-songwriter smarts,
pop accessibility and beat-savvy production to great effect. a guy
called gerald gets dark and doomy on the jungle mix, while steve
osborne does ugly things with the vocal on an otherwise servicable
techno stormer. but the b-side again trumps all, as coffey stakes
her claim to the old-time blues and jazz tradition with an eerie
reading of billie holiday's "strange fruit." classic and
absolutely modern at the same time.
