jason brunton started making music in 1990 almost by accident when
his dad bought a second hand four track tape recorder, an old
yamaha drum machine and a big bag of tangled cables. he instantly
tried to re-create the sounds he'd heard on early detroit techno
and chicago house records and failed miserably! he then hooked up
with a friend of a friend, peter drummie and started working with
him in an attempt to fuse house and techno rhythms with jazz based
melodies - all the time secretly wanting to make acid house!
over a two year period - from 1991-1993 - jason continued to
'learn the ropes' and also embarked on a career in a glasgow music
store where he was able to combine work with learning, whilst at
the same time expanding his equipment arsenal. 1993 saw jason's
first release on edinburgh club pure's 'seminal' compilation "out
there - a journey through time", alongside black dog, andy
weatherall and psychic warriors ov gaia.
a year later jason started to play live gigs as 'pleasure'
alongside peter drummie at the legendary flow nights in glasgow -
"where art met acid house". this gave them the chance to perform
at many weird and wonderful places around the city, including the
people's palace and the winter gardens, and with many weird and
wonderful people such as stefan robbers, max404, mark broom and
global communications to name but a few.
two years later jason worked on two co-releases with domenic
cappello (sub club and seventh sign) on glasgow's famous soma
recordings (hutton drive) and leeds' 20/20 vision (urb n
ri-space city ep). 1998 saw his first solo release on london-based
sirkus label -relativity/divisions bringing many plaudits for his
fusion of depth, melodies and techno rhythms. this year was also
important as it signalled the beginning of his partnership with
iridite co-founder craig allan (rei loci).
in 1999 jason played live alongside japan's jazz pioneers, ufo to
much acclaim and less than a year later remixed arron carl's
'crucified' for sirkus. the track was licensed from the legendary
detroit based soul city label and was originally produced by mad
mike of ur. jason and craig played live late 1999 at the
legendary club 69 for the launch night of their new label "veto" -
the sub club burns down the next night!
in 2000 jason worked with daniel ibboston of glasgow underground
and fenetik fame on remixes of inversion (jason brunton remix).
summer 2001 iridite is finally launched (after an enforced name
change from "veto" due to the previously unknown existence of
another "veto" imprint from birmingham, uk- also distributed by
integrale muzique!) and its first release takes the world by storm
(sort of). late 2001,jason made the decision to move to amsterdam
to concentrate on "artistic integrity" (well that's what he told
us anyway!), where he has continued to produce new work at an
alarmingly slow rate.
jason's remix for the king of broken beat, agent k (aka kahdi
tatham)- feed the cat on london's laws of motion caused a real
stir though- exciting crowds from techno to deep house and back
through jazz, drawing comparisons with mad mike, carl craig and
moodymann and dj reactions and radio play from japan to new york.
laws of motion continue to help spread jason's music further with
another remix ep due in december- tom noble's muito legal-
crossing more boundaries into the worlds of latin and dub whilst
retaining an inquisitive techno mindset.
