| Dudu Pukwana and the "Spears" recorded in London, but were only ever |
| released in South Africa. The story behind this extraordinary music |
| and the famous names involved are documented in this extended edition |
| of Dudu Pukwana's debut album. |
| |
| In 1964 the Blue Notes left South Africa to play at the Antibes Jazz |
| Festival in France, and more or less stayed away forever after. In |
| January 1969 alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana went home briefly along |
| with producer Joe Boyd who persuaded Johannesburg record company |
| Trutone to license the recordings for release in South Africa. |
| |
| Matsuli Music's discovery of a second unpublished London recording |
| session, following Dudu's South Africa visit, reveals hitherto |
| unknown music, and history. In addition to Richard Thompson (Fairport |
| Convention) and Joe Mogotsi (Manhattan Brothers) putting their own |
| spin on mbaqanga hits like Sibuyile, the Blue Notes' fabled Church |
| Mouse and an early version of Andromeda can also be heard. |
| |
| With Pukwana's explosive style and energy evident throughout, this |
| album fills in an exciting and important lost piece of the Blue |
| Notes' and South Africa's exile jazz story. |
| |
| Original Dudu Phukwana and the "Spears" LP recorded in 1968 and only |
| released in South Africa on Trutone's Quality label (LTJ-S 232) in |
| 1969. Atlantic acetate (Tracks 11-19) recorded and produced in 1969 |
| but never released. |
| |

| "Dudu Phukwana and the 'Spears'- actually 'the Spear' - an incredible |
| South African jazz record produced by Joe Boyd for Witchseason |
| Productions in the UK, at around the same time that Boyd was |
| producing for the likes of Nick Drake and Fairport Convention, for |
| whom South Africans like saxophonist Phukwana and pianist Chris |
| McGregor would session. |
| |
| If you've not heard the music I've largely seen referred to as Cape |
| Jazz, you might be surprised how familiar it is, when you hear this |
| album. To me, much of it sounds like the type of jazz Weldon Irvine |
| would exemplify, for instance, in the early 1970s, as it's vibrant |
| and cheerful, while at the same time tense and complicated. |
| |
| It also sounds like music you would hear on Broadway from 1967 on, as |
| Galt MacDermot took this style of jazz music - which he fell in love |
| with during his time living in South Africa in the 1950s - and used |
| much of its style on his landmark 'Shapes of Rhythm' album and also |
| on his HAIR musical. |
| |
| It's wild to reflect on this time in South Africa's history, in which |
| an exiled giant like Phukwana would record with a maverick like Boyd, |
| and then find his music issued only back in his home country, by a |
| label whose boss told Boyd that, Miriam Makeba included, all Black |
| South African exiles would return to their country 'with their tails |
| between their legs.' |

| The jazz scene in South Africa is one of the most dense and |
| impenetrable I've ever encountered, and its only thanks to labels |
| like Matsuli that so many historical wrongs are now being |
| rectified." |
