"Music For Speakers is a new European label aiming to explore the
rhythms and structures of modern electronic dance music, both vocal and
instrumental, in a relaxed yet experimental way. Influences from such
musical styles as trip-hop, lounge, drum 'n' bass and jazz can be found
in the music, but interpreted in a new and refreshing way. Featured on
this compilation are a selection of tracks from Aardvark, David Caron,
Madcap, Sandor Caron, and Sonar Lodge.
Sonar Lodge
Sonar Lodge open the compilation and have a further three tracks later
in the line-up. Confetti Check A-OK is an excellent jazz influenced drum
'n' bass track with Twin Peaks atmospherics. No Words is a smooth vocal
track featuring cool drums, beats and Moog work with an underlying Isaac
Hayes funk feel. L.O.V.E is smoother and more relaxed still, featuring
almost ethereal jazzy vocals, laid back drums, more cool Moog work and
very cool keyboards, with some cello thrown in for good measure. Their
final track, To Have To Hold, is another jazzy vocal track, this time a
little more down tempo, combining the Moog sound with acoustic and
electric guitar, low-key drums, cello and piano, with the odd sound
effect thrown in.
Sandor Caron
Sandor Caron's first track is Hidden Agenda and features Kirsty Hawkshaw
of Opus 3 fame. Hidden Agenda starts out with a lunar atmospherics,
adding a jazzy bassline, drum 'n' bass beats and Kirsty's jazzy vocal
talents. Agenda opens with a lone piano, adding laid-back beats, a
brooding bassline and a string accompaniment. Caron's last track on the
compilation is A.S.U and features hip-hop style beats, dark piano
melodies and a manipulated vocal sample as well as other effects.
David Caron
David Caron is Sandor Caron's brother and the only artist here to
feature just one track. His track, Long Wait, combines an electronic
bassline and snappy beats with cello, minimal Moog dabbling and jazz
percussion (including the interesting use of a hand clapping sample).
Madcap
Madcap are Richard Hermes (electronics) and Felix Van De Vorst
(guitars/vocals). They have been recording together since 1992. Their
first track is Nocturnal Mammals II and features hip-hop style beats and
computerised bassline alongside distinctly funky keyboards and
percussion. Their other track featured here is Envelope Pusher and is
more jazz influenced than Nocturnal Mammals II, combining dubby bass and
drum 'n' bass beats with funky space age electronic music. An
interesting combination of styles.
Aardvark
DJ Aardvark (Mike Kivits) has been at the forefront of the Dutch dance
music scene since the early 80's, DJing in whole range of places and
styles as well as releasing the occasional 12" single. There are two
Aardvark tracks on this compilation, the first being Ambi Pur and the
other being Implant (with Roomtone aka guitarist Jeroen
This compilation is an interesting mixture of electronic and
traditional musical styles, resulting in what is probably best
described as electronic lounge music. There are a whole range of
influences evident here, from jazz to hip-hop to funk, all smoothly
fusing cool tradition styles with equally chilled modern electronic
music. A quite ambitious combination to attempt, but one that
certainly works here. It will be interesting to see what else comes
out on this label in the future, their emphasis always being on
originality. Very cool sleeve design too." --Paul Lloyd
