"The Amateur Hermetic" is unique. No similar projects are to be
found. Not on M÷llevσngstorget. Or on Earth. And this, we guess,
must be felt as the ultimate reward for an artist in this field
(or any field). This is an album about a nomadic lifestyle of
moving to a new flat every second year, about feeding children
and getting lost in occult references and religious doubts,
about growing a beard. Isolation. The Philosopher's Stone (in
Sundin's own words). "The Amateur Hermetc" involves transforming
a part of oneself (e.g., the voice) into something
unrecognizable and alien, letting go of reality, and slipping
into a dream. It's also about the four fundamental elements as
well as the black monolith depicted on the cover (which isn't
just black, by the way, but subtly displays some scribbly
drawings too). Finally, it's about people (like the three
historical figures shown on the inner sleeve) who use alchemy to
transform themselves and delve into the secrets of nature.
In Sundin's words "The lack of sleep. Fire, Wind, Water, Earth.
The black monolith. To let go of reality and slip into the
dream. It is also about people who tried to transform things,
themselves and explore the inner secrets of nature through the
use of alchemy. Angels. Queens. Peasants. Persian bread with
peanut butter and lingonberry jam."
It was conceived in springtime, in moonlight, with drunks
howling in the dark outside the window - forever lost, still
searching for that missing purpose, that inner light, that
furnace of life, love, wealth and rejuvenation.
