Like vinyl fanatics, mono purists still roam the earth,
insisting that stereo mixes of music originally recorded in
mono never sound as good as the originals. To those sonic
luddites, this edition of the Who's debut is a giant middle
finger, with stereo versions of "My Generation," "The Kids
Are Alright," and the rest giving these classic performances
new vitality and clarity. Disc one also includes a stereo
mix of "I Can't Explain" as well as "Bald Headed Woman" and
"Daddy Rolling Stone." The second disc features early Who
recordings that have shown up on compilations as well as a
batch of previously unreleased material, most notably an
instrumental "My Generation" and the Townshend-penned
"Instant Party Mixture," which features both "Runaround
Sue"-style doo-wop and surf guitar. Alternate versions of
"Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere," "The Good's Gone," and Eddie
Holland's "Leaving Here" round things out. In these new
mixes, the sheer manic energy of the Who's earliest
recordings, best demonstrated in a mono version of "My
Generation" on disc two, is more palpable than ever.
