=============================================================================

Jack de Marseille is one of the leading DJs on the French scene.
Living his attachment to France's oldest city with nobility, he
imposed a plural, fraternal, sensual, demanding and thoroughly
human vibe upon the nearby clubs as well as in European mega-raves
in a few years time. His first impulse, techno, is fed like an
athlete before performance with the richness, dynamic and power of
the machines. Jack's energy is found at the heart of the
congregation of beats and effects characteristic of the 3rd
millennium's music. Using minimal sounds, he builds up to a wide,
irradiating sound, contacts with jungle and house operating as
resource in order to free this soul extra, this vital inner voice.
He started composing recently. The immediate intensity of his
productions on the Ozone (Grenoble based) and What's Up/Mix-it
(Paris based) labels send back to a similar creative pattern. Like
a mirror image of his DJ works, his tracks constantly aim at the
     dancer's soul. Squaaly, May 1997

Asking a techno DJ / producer about the creative process is
admitting there is creation where a certain number of people still
only hear a more or less skilful compilation of noises. A talented
and renowned DJ in France and overseas since 1992, Jack de
Marseille pushed open the doors of the studio only early 1996. He
first discovered the machines with his colleagues and friends from
Ozone Records in Grenoble. "Although I was taught in a music
academy and therefore knew music theory, I immediately trusted my
ear as guide. Instinctively, I sought sounds, organised and
arranged them." remembers Jack. In less than a year, he composed
and recorded his first titles: "Submerge" on Ozone Records and
"Ellipsia" on "Mo' DJs under a Groove #3" compilation (What's
Up/Mix-it). The dance floor is convinced. "If my first desire is to
make people dance, I've discovered with time that this desire hides
a real need to communicate." Jack likes meeting people. Making
exchanges: "The pleasure I get in giving to people goes along the
same line as the one I experience when I see them happy from
receiving." he admits. When he's recording a mix outside parties,
he'd rather be on the air, bathed by the red light of a radio
station studio, than in front of the decks by himself. Music is
more a gift of one's self than a simple gift. Like all big men, he
reckons there's no grace without work. "I've always been very
rigorous, almost perfectionist. Now I've set up my own studio in
Marseille, I can push my experiences further. I am no sound
engineer. I'm struggling a bit, but I know the way, my way!" The
way in which he grasps the meaning of his work and the way in which
he formulates this are indirectly linked to his participation in a
French TV show ("La Marche du SiΦcle", May 1997). In this special
edition on contemporary music styles, he represented the techno
scene. Implicitly having to give a formal conception of his music
and also having to describe his artistic approach in proper French,
it seems to him it was then he found the magic words: "I then
understood that the same emotion of a track could be contained in a
tight, dense and compact rhythmic as well as in a rhythmic
progression of sounds. I'm now looking for new sensations inside
     the studio."

On his last compositions, the beat is faster, the sound more
massive, more hypnotic than simply energising. He puts it this way:
"My new compositions will naturally find a place in longer sets,
where you can develop more subtle, more creative aspects." This
constant return between Djaying and studio work is vital to him. "I
generally enter the studio after I've spent several weekends mixing
in clubs. I impregnate myself, reload. It's happened that during
the night, I totally disconnect for a while, like gone with the
chaos of sound. This flash, this emotional discharge regenerates
me." Whoever has seen Jack mixing is bound to be struck by his
sets' physical intensity. This generosity, this need to give pushes
him, even more than before, to use 3 decks. "It's not a DJ's fancy
but rather a total different way of apprehending a part of the set.
You don't think on the short term anymore, it's not vinyl after
vinyl but deck after deck. You mix faster and above all, you keep
the energy and tension longer, so you go furtherà" It's as if when
the set reaches a peak, Jack reaches the doors of the studio. This
creator needs those powerful and passionate preliminaries to
express his sensitivity, his intimate groove, his funky soul. In a
process, guided by the power of African beats - a power he feels
and transcribes each time he gets behinds the decks - Jack shapes
the elements of his sound structure with freshness. He then adjusts
these in a coherent or malicious dosage: "Each sound is filtered
through successive layers so that I can get as close as possible to
my emotions. I don't sample. I use the common pre-set voices on the
machines and then dress them up, personalise them. This approach
enables me to create a highly reactive range of voices. This
complex alchemy, the way he colours the sound before launching it
in outer space, these are his actual main interests. Sound isn't a
simple emotional vehicle anymore, but a defined element in tonality
and intensity. This, in a rhythmic relation to other sounds of the
range, can create the emotion, give birth to it. Boiling with
ideas, excited and passionate, Jack closes the studio doors behind
us. Had he simply stopped to answer our questions? Not so sure.
Say, how does it work? --hypertunez
