Third installment from Fat City Records. As usual, these guys dont
stick to any particular genre of music. I realize that release trails
off the usual 'sweetbeats' path here and there. You'll notice that
Alongside the downtempo beats, this compilation has some hiphop, some
funk, and even some reggae dub styles. However, in the end, this
album just had to be a sweetbeats release. These guys at Fat City follow
a simple format for music they put on thier compilations. Bad assed rare
funky feel good party music.

Ill Brothers-Funkneck
The Brothers lift the bassline from the Rubberband's 'Rubber band jam'
and twang it hard. Couple this with the ego dripping braggadocio and
viola.......one of last year's sickest moments now realized for a wider
audience
The Aboriginals With Abyss-The Essence
A Brooklyn duo dedicated to keeping the mid-skool vibe of Tribe Called
Quest and the Native Tonges alive. Joined by MC Abyss who assists in
spattering vernacular over the Abo's Trademark thickjazz beats. A big
party cut so put your hands in the Ayers and rock to this!
Hopeton Lewis - Express Yourself
Charles Wright's original made a fair splash when first released in the
70's. Jamacian singer Hopeton Lewis (choosing to replace most of the
vocals with a flute solo) supplies a sweet, rootical slant on proceedings
Aim - Loop Dreams (Grand Central Remix)
One of Grand Central's finest moments. This slab of jazzual, cut up
instra-hop targeted squarely at the dancefloor and was felt by everyone
everywhere.
Jamaica's Groove Band - Shaft
It made it to Africa but sadly John Shaft didn't touch upon Jamacian
shores. Here the Groove Band recognise his honorary yardman status
and transform his swagger into a crime busting jamdown skank.
Kwanza Posse - Wicked Funk
Gnarly balearica. Funkmaster Sweat and the posse come through mob
handed, manhandling a whole crate of seminal breaks into a rich funk
risotto.
Jazicac Sunflowers - Mambo Chant
First Released on Bob Jones' label this track is more restrained than
it's title suggests. Layered downbeatery that employs a killer break
from Ramsey Lewis. This is Sunday afternoon on wax.
Spanky Wilson - Sunshine of Your Love
A cover of an old Cream track (as in Eric Clapton, not the club).
Tough, lounge funk alongside Spanky's soaring vocals and a brass
section on steroids make this track that tears up the dancefloor
like a freight train coming through the fire exit.
James Bong - I dont Feel Well (Dr. Scruff Remix)
Poorly Danish Bong was referred to Britain's most respected herbal
practitioner Dr. Scruff. His prescription of jazz, cuts and
special ingredients is mixed slowly over warm turntables. Remember
you can only get this treatment here. Go on you know you need it....
Natural Resource - Heavy Loungin'
Natural Resource exemplify the mindstate of forward thinking hip hop
with tactical jazz manouvers that switch course midway through,
flipping the scrip and everything else for that matter.
First Encounter - Short Affair
Much more than just a fat break from 7L & Esoteric's 'Def Rhymes', this
layered bass laden jazz funk of the widescreen variety
Amalgamation of Soundz - Silicone
Responsible for some of the most sublime, horizontal moments on Dorado
offshoot 'Filter' the Soundz bring us an exclusive - cooled, contemporary
jazz of the downbeat variety. Feet up massive, this one's yours.....
Martin Brew - Hit the Disco
Fat City Allstar Martin Brew is also one half of rising Manc
Beatologists. 'J-Walk'. For this rare solo appearance and despite
the title and his penchant for handlebar moustaches he supplies a short
& sweet growlbass hiphop number.
