Intergalactic Sounds: Ancient to Future
For over a decade Straight No Chaser magazine has maintained its
rep as the definitive guide to the nu-music underground and the
culture that embraces it. Under the banner of "Interplanetary
Sounds ¡ Ancient to Future" the magazine is rooted in the jazz
spirit. It champions the creative cutting edge of the hip hop, drum
n bass, deep house and nu-jaz scenes while travelling globally to
Brazil, Latin America, Africa and beyond. From day One the Chaser
trajectory has been radical. Chaser unites the spiritual with the
political. It elevates the visual world ¡ photography,
illustration/fine art and typo-graffix ¡ to reside alongside the
music. Modern and urban yet outer-national and esoteric, Straight
No Chaser taps in at the source and finds itself naturally
propelled into the new age.
Straight No Chaser emerged of of the legendary London club session
Talkin' Loud & Saying in the summer of 1988 on the cusp of the
Ecstasy/Rave revolution. The magazine's mentor was wayward jazz
genius Thelonious Sphere Monk and it's perspective was tuned to the
Freedom Principle.
The mission:
- History was a mystery to be illuminated
- A vision for the future that was to be projected onto a
new-millenium screen.
The award-winning design of the magazine is ever-changing courtesy
of the graffix-overseer, Swifty. Chaser's articles and Gallery
section has provided a home for the cream of nu-generation painters
and illustrators. Straight No Chaser doesn't try to be stylish, it
just is. Standards have to be maintained.
The 50+ issues of the magazine have consistently championed an open
ended eclecticism and Chaser covers stars have included John
Coltrane, Roni Size, Courtney Pine, Tom Waits, Femi Kuti, 4 Hero,
Talvin Singh, Cassandra Wilson, UFO, Beth Orton, Sizzla, Guru &
Donald Byrd, Leftfield and Detroit's dark techno warriors,
Underground Resistance.
Chaser's staunchly independent stance has earned it a devoted
readership from London to Oslo, LA to Tokyo, from Sao Paulo to
Berlin, from Milan to Sydney. The Freedom Principle has been
maintained. In fact, at Straight No Chaser we are free to pursue
any damn thing we like. Join us for the ride. --dustygroove.com
