The genres of leftfield chill out, downtempo and ambient music
have been codified over the years with Brian Eno's 1978 album
'Ambient I : Music for Airports', and there was a long tradition
of dreamy, psychedelic synthesizer music in bands like Tangerine
Dream, Steve Roach and Robert Rich. After the explosion of rave
music in the 80's and 90's, chill out had a new birth - with
mixtures of rhythm, movement, bodies in motion thrown into the
crystal glass sound emporium of ambient. Combined and fused
together, this new genre was explored by KLF, Aphex Twin, Amon
Tobin, and many more in the coming years.
Dan Fingermann's album is a beautiful work - subtle, hypnotic,
and mysterious, with nary a shred of smugness or snark. There
is a sublime pastoral element here to his works on 'Tyro', and
Dan doesn't come up for air until nearly 45 minutes later.
From the 'Voyager' and 'Flustered Hearts' cuts, to the real
motif of the EP 'Pastel Wilderness', there is something deep in
here for everyone, and this is a terrific first release from Dan
on our Ambient Wave record label.
