this rich and varied region. The music of Africa is
recognized worldwide for its complex rhythms and
upbeat dance styles. The predominant image of
African music is that of drumming and percussion,
and indeed much of the rhythmic elements of
contemporary popular music throughout the Western
world have roots in the rhythms of Africa. Africa
is also a tremendous source of beautiful, melodic
music with a slower, more introspective flavor. For
