The Cookin' mission continues with EP number 5 - another 4 track
melting pot of hip-hop, soul, jazz and funk.
Realside - "Reality"
High calibre hip-hop instrumentalism, with the deftest of vocal
touches. Tribe vibe beats and bassline interweave with flourishes
of Flute and gentle guitar. A few choice scratches jump in along
the way.
White Rhino - "Definition"
The steady and defining beat foregrounds a cache of summer-charged
instrumental delicacies that are kept in place by the heavy but
reassuring bass-line. An irresistable guitar slide keeps the
flavour fresh whilst the keyboards soar high into the atmosphere.
The guiro led percussion holds things together as a disengaged
voice repeats intermittently, adding an abstract soundtrack
element.
Lacarno & Burns - "Bossa Perduta"
A sleazy organ lick kicks off the proceedings and provides the
track with an undeniably urban flavour. L&B have coralled together
muttering doo-wap vocal stabs, perky organ keys and analogue
osscillations. The result is a sexy Latin workout with a respectful
nod to the 70's jazz-funk pioneers and a box of modern production
tricks.
K-Scope - "Dawn Of A New Age"
The consistent Cookin' regulars take to wax again, hot on the heels
of the immense 'Set Up' from Earth 4. You know the drill by now -
live instrumentation all the way, a gelling sax performance and a
stack of dirty moog bass with fine double bass support.
Sophisticated performance and pure funky flavours from the
ever-maturing Brighton duo.
