"Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez have set the standard for
remixing by reconstructing records. As Masters At Work, they've
developed a knack for sending records that seemed to have little club
potential to the top of the dance charts. Original MAW productions,
including the Bucketheads, Barbara Tucker, The Braxtons and the
Nuyorican Soul album project, have established them as premier
producers. With the formation of MAW Records, the Masters At Work set
out to further develop themselves as a production force, while exposing
the fresh talent of other producers and artists.
While Kenny and Louie both started out as DJs, the roads they travelled
to get there were quite different. Louie seemed destined for a career in
music from birth, as he comes from a family deep in musical tradition.
His father, Louie Vega, Sr., is an accomplished jazz and Latin sax
player, and his uncle, Hector LaVoe, was a famed salsa singer. While
still in his teens, Louie started spinning at the Devils Nest,
Heartthrob, and Studio 54. By the time he started doing production work,
he had worked in nearly every club in New York and had reached near
legendary status as a DJ in the dance community.
Kenny "Dope", meanwhile, was doing mobile DJ work with his crew who
called themselves the Masters At Work. While dropping hip hop at
neighborhood parties, he decided he could create beats and tracks at
least as well as the people on the records he was spinning, and so
created Dope Wax, his own independent label. After several underground
hits on his own, he started doing tracks for other New York indies,
including Strictly Rhythm, Cutting, Nervous and Big Beat. By the time
mutual friend, Todd Terry (to whom Kenny lent the name Masters At Work
for the 1988 release, "Alright, Alright") introduced him to "Little"
Louie, he had built a reputation as one of the best beat-men in town,
well versed in hip hop, dancehall and house.
Having established their presence as DJs, remixers and producers,
Masters At Work continue to use their blend of hip hop, house, jazz
and Latin roots to create unique musical experiences that defy
boundaries and conventional limitations.--analog
