Finally, French TV #9 is unleashed! And worth the wait
it most certainly was!! This is almost a first for FTV
as the line-up is almost exactly the same as the last
release! Founder Mike Sary on bass, Chris Smith on
guitars & violin and Warren Dale on keyboards, mallet
instruments, winds/reeds (both charter members for the
last 3 releases) and relative new-comer Jeff Gard on
drums who was also the drummer on the last release.
"This Is What We Do" would have been the first French
TV album in history to have had identical personnel
from the previous release except that the third track
("My Little Cicada") has Italian keyboardist Paolo
Botta replacing Warren Dale. (Botta served as
keyboardist for the band on 2005's 'European Tour'
since Dale had other commitments and couldn't go.)
Anyway, despite the fact that two of the members of
this ensemble live in Louisville, KY and the other two
reside in San Diego, CA, this version of the group has
become one tight, hard-rockin' force! For most of the
five tracks here the sound is very much French TV and,
although there are clearly influences at work here &
there, their sound has become "their sound"! While
there are certainly audible reference points in places,
most noteably Zappa and Happy the Man, most of this is
difficult (if not impossible) to pin down with any
accuracy. Maybe a bit of Univers Zero in some of the
rhythm section interplay, certainly a hint at The
Muffins in some of the horn work, little flashes of
ELP, King Crimson, and the like, and definitely some
Samlas in some of the arrangements - but the majority
of this is all their own. There are more changes in
tempo, mood, timbre and themes in this music than there
are variations of color in a kaleidoscope! In fact,
'kaleidoscopic music' would probably be a good
description of what they do except for the randomness
that would imply. These are well-planned and meticulous
compositions executed flawlessly. To say that this
would appeal to fans of any of the names dropped above
- and more - would only be to state the very obvious.
Now, French TV are THE premier American instrumental
progressive group! Highly recommended!!
We use LAME 3.97 now, which is approved.
