Off-Centre is the defining club of post Blue Note East London, and has
become one of the most successful left-field events in the UK. Tapping
into the general yearning for a party rather than a club feel,
Off-Centre has built its success on the contrasting musical genres that
it promotes: hard and dark drum and bass / hip hop clashes with bright,
up tempo, soulful house. The contrasting moods are strongly linked by a
preference for jazz / soul heritage.
Off-Centre breaks the trainspotter mould that comes with left-field
clubs: the Graham Rounthwaite styling is accessible to male and female
in equal measures, and retains a sense of humour (tongue in cheek
sidelines like the Super 8 Cinema and the Atari Club) while offering a
serious playlist from residents Patrick Forge, Ross Clarke, and Mr.
Scruff alongside regulars Fabio, Harvey, Kemistry and Storm, Phil Asher,
DJ Debra, State of Bengal and Paul Trouble Anderson.
Off-Centre is now pushing one step further with a compilation for chris
blackwell's palmpictures label. compiled by patrick and ross, it is an
equal mix of exclusives from regular Off-Centre contributors and
licensed tracks.
The "Off-Centre" compilation represents all flavours of the club, from
Harvey's live jazz riff, to the beats of State of Bengal and Treva
Whateva, the D&B of the Bill Riley produced Washington M15, the
British soul / hip hop sounds of Espionage (with a brilliant reworking
of Eric B for President) and Roots Manuva and the new afro-fusion of
