Release Notes:

The touchingly earnest title of this collection reflects the origins of
the Alpha Boys' School, a cherished institution in Jamaica that nurtured
the talents of such legendary musicians as Don Drummond, Tommy McCook,
Lester Sterling, Johnny Osbourne and Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, among
many others. Run for over 100 years by the Sisters of Mercy, the school
has long been a training ground for Kingston's poorest children, and has
been producing top-notch musicians (along with skilled tradesmen) since
its founding in the late 19th century. The recordings collected here were
made between 1955 and 2002, and are mostly instrumental numbers in jazz,
ska and rock steady styles. (The album's final track is a touching
rendition of "Onward and Upward We Go," the school's anthem, performed and
sung by the Alpha Boys' School Band.) A few performances, such as Dizzy
Reece and His Quartet's rendition of the bop classic "Now's the Time" and
Lester Stirling's uncharacteristically pedestrian "Soul Voyage," are
workmanlike and unremarkable. But the blend of jazz and early reggae
sounds works surprisingly well, and there are some revelatory moments on
the program, many of them from lesser-known artists. These include Bertie
King's wonderful arrangement of "Blue Lou," Harold McNair's virtuosic
flute performance (with multiphonics) on his own "The Hipster," and a fine
deejay turn by Wallace on "Skanky." Highly recommended to anyone with an
interest in the history of Jamaican musical culture
