An artist with a long association with Particles, Espen now
returns to the label with his Late Night Snack. Two original
tracks are partnered with remixes from Finland and the USA.
A career that spans over 15 years, Espen Gulbrandsen has
consistently found himself at the upper echelons on the
electronic dance movement with support from the likes of Armin
Van Buuren and Solarstone. Using his Espen moniker from 2007
brought similar success on likes of Silk Music, Stellar Fountain
and Lost Language. July 2019's Until Tomorrow marked an
impressive original EP on Particles following on from remixes
for Omar El Gamal and Rick Pier O'Neil and Desaturate.
Re-emerging for the label some eighteen months later, Schuko is
a wonderfully crafted affair that reveals itself delicately
through smooth off-beat percussion, filtered arpeggio and
reverb-laden vocal breaths. A rolling bassline adds depth while
white-noise effects and spot effects swirl across the stereo
spectrum. A chorus of pads and evolution of the central phrase
alongside counterpoint melodies adds a deft touch. Late Night
Snack continues the deeply resonating power of its predecessor
as muted arp and wave-like pads open up to reveal a delicate
melodic structure beneath fizzing hi-hat urgency. Flowing keys
ripple across the mid-range with complex ease, changing in
structure and sonic architecture as they go. The result is an
immaculately crafted affair.
From his home in southern Finland, Ultravizion has struck a
chord with a clutch of impressive imprints and his deep house
sound. An array of impressive productions has seen the Finn
appear on such impressive imprints as The Purr, RYNTH and Pole
Folder's Reworck. February 2020's Yakagir for Suprematic was
also a notable highlight. Making his Particles debut, the
Ultravizion remix retains the intricate melodic detail of Late
Night Snack while a new grooved motif reveals itself with gentle
hypnotic phrasing. Glorious pads rooted in Espen's original
meander across the stereo range with ease as layers of
stratified sound pay tribute to the original while harnessing
Ultravizion's impressive production prowess with deep kick and
percussive power.
Making a bang with his debut for Glasgow Underground in
September 2017 remixing Paolo Mojo, Jayden Klight has continued
to carve out a niche with an impressive selection of original
material for L'enfant terrible, Nie Wieder Schlafen and Seven
Villas. October 2018's Departure and 2019's Contact Six EPs were
prominent high points for the Pablo Bolivar led label. Reworking
Late Night Snack with typical aplomb, the Jayden Klight remix
revels in delicate broken beat rhythm that lends itself
perfectly to the new melodic phrasing and rich sonic palette
presented by the US star. As impressive as it is inspired, the
remix harks back the golden era of progressive breaks in the
early 2000s, championed by the likes of Benz and MD and Digital
Witchcraft. The result is a mature and impressive offering.
A pair of new tasty tracks plus remixes from Ultravizion and
Jayden Klight are a powerful reminder of Espen's talent.
