A redoubtable talent with a vast array of music to his name,
Andre Sobota returns to Proton Music with another twin-track
original EP, Under the Radar.
An artist always at the top of his production game, Andre Sobota
consistently dines at underground music's top table. With the
rare ability to appeal to a wide audience with his distinctive
rolling grooves and immaculate melodic phrasing, the Brazilian
has lit up the industry with a portfolio that is second to none.
From remixing Coldplay and Rihanna for behemoth EMI to a
magisterial collection of music for the likes of Anjunadeep,
Perfecto, Zerothree and microCastle, Sobota has continued to
inspire a host of up-and-coming producers with his immaculate
attention to detail, hard work and craftsmanship that translates
into almost 600 production credits.
Accounting for more than 50 of those credits over a decade,
Andre Sobota has been a regular on Proton Music since a debut
remixing Bastards of Funk and Sonic Union in November 2009. A
month later, the ground-breaking three-track Outside EP appeared
to critical acclaim and remixes from Ryan Davis, Kassey Voorn
and Shingo Nakamura followed. A reworked version of that iconic
debut EP appeared in 2014 with the aptly titled 5 Years Outside,
while Fragments, Concluded, Unmute and Alter Ego have all gone
on to showcase the outstanding production values that represent
the Andre Sobota approach to sound design and musical narrative.
Now returning to Proton Music, Never Ending is a beautifully
arranged track that bristles with muted pads and chest-thumping
kick before a growling bassline groove erupts into an exquisite
sonic space. A trademark offbeat rolling percussion adds subtle
dancefloor flavour while a shimmering, delayed and freeform
melody coruscates gently across proceedings, enveloping the
listener in rich and warm harmonics. Building imperceptibly into
the second half with extended melodic interplay, the result is
another triumph.
The title track opens with a whip-cracking kick as a delayed
arpeggio and warm pad rises gently in open-filtered fashion.
Ticking hi-hats and clicking clave add percussive intricacy,
while a subtle bass cadence locked to the rhythmic groove
extends Under the Radar. Hitting the breakdown with a stripped
back arpeggio phrasing that swims across the left-right
spectrum, the track enters its second half with a continuation
of the gloriously smooth melodic flow that showcases Sobota's
sound design abilities. By making sublime use of a sonic palette
that blends effortlessly in tones, the Sao Paolo resident paints
another memorable picture across eight-and-a-half minutes of
sonic joy.
Another twin-track EP of the highest quality finds Andre Sobota
flying Under the Radar.
