Truckfighters, the band with the name that makes you want to
kick a Ford right in the grill, are zooming down the
expressway and up into your jet stream with their fourth
full-length album, Universe.
Long affiliated with all things fuzzy, the Swedish trio have
continued down this progressive wormhole by feeding their
stoner metal palate a hefty diet of mushrooms and DMT.
Universe isn't on the same astral-psych trip that the
wonderful Mania was, nor is it as flat-out heavy and as rim-
rocking jammy as 2007's Phi or their 2005 debut Gravity X - a
fast becoming stoner metal paradigm - rather, Universe is the
accumulation of its predecessors, a knotty bloc of the band's
ideas and styles squeezed like the sweetest of oranges by
resin fists and dripped direct and juicy from your speakers.
In true hatchback fashion, Truckfighters ultracompact
everything on Universe. The opener, "Mindcontrol," is a sure-
fire red blanket with a snapping drum beat, a host of
loquacious fuzzy riffs, and then there's Oskar 'Ozo' Cedermalm
and his ever-improving vocals that really drive this album
home to momma. His voice shines glossy with inflection
throughout, but moreover Ozo is brimming with charisma and
confidence. He knows his spots and he knows his melodies, and
on a track like "The Chairman," his efforts, in addition to
the album's progressive leanings, help produce what has
speedily become a quintessential Truckfighters tune.
With only seven songs, Universe's modest track listing is no
surprise as the band have continued to mature stylistically.
Similar to Mania but without its psychedelics, Universe does a
tremendous of sounding sieve-tight without ever sacrificing
its cozy slack and smoky comforts. Likewise, a peculiar brand
of post-punk retroism floats around the sound waves.
Truckfighters never sound old, nor do they sound entirely new.
Similar to other Swedish acts like Witchcraft, Graveyard, and
Spiritual Beggars, Truckfighters embody a rich, genuine
nostalgia of simple sure-fire fuzz and fresh, clever
undercurrents.
