"An extremely well-named set, Her Space
Holiday presents a dreamy collection of
hypnotic, spacey trance-tunes reminiscent of
Spiritualized or sometimes the Jesus & Mary
Chain in those bands' quieter moments.
Nearly half of the first volume is taken up
by a lengthy impressionistic piece called
"The Fourth of July," which musically
portrays the lazy falling drift of exploded
fireworks far more than the explosions
themselves. In fact, it's based on a field
recording of one Fourth of July evening,
featuring distant fireworks, live
improvisation, and a series of overdubs. A
collection of songs spanning a two-year
period recorded at home on "various analog
machines," the performances and sound
quality are no distraction despite leader
Marc Bianchi's protestations to the contrary
in his notes. The Astronauts Are Sleeping
presents fine late-night listening, being
restful without dissipating into airy
treacle."
