Û°Û Auckland's Stefan Neville, a.k.a. Pumice, has Û°Û
Û°Û been working in relative obscurity for a long Û°Û
Û°Û time now, releasing a series of cassettes, CD-Rs, Û°Û
Û°Û and only recently readily-available CDs from the Û°Û
Û°Û Last Visible Dog (2003's Raft), Pseudoarcana Û°Û
Û°Û (last year's Spears) and, now, Soft Abuse labels. Û°Û
Û°Û Neville's also previously worked with Chris Knox, Û°Û
Û°Û Sunken and the Nothing, among other projects. Û°Û
Û°Û Û°Û
Û°Û Recorded in November of 2004, Yeahnahvienna was Û°Û
Û°Û made while Neville was installed in Vienna as Û°Û
Û°Û artist in residence at Museumsquartier. Based Û°Û
Û°Û primarily on acoustic guitar and voice, some Û°Û
Û°Û songs also bring in cassettes, organ and Û°Û
Û°Û percussion. The recording is resolutely lo-fi, Û°Û
Û°Û with both the good and bad that comes of the Û°Û
Û°Û approach: it's occasionally murky and Û°Û
Û°Û ill-defined, but also intimate and imbued with an Û°Û
Û°Û undeniable personal touch. There's nothing slick Û°Û
Û°Û or polished here; it's all one person, Û°Û
Û°Û communicating directly in unvarnished sound. At Û°Û
Û°Û times it feels as though Neville is trying too Û°Û
Û°Û hard, purposely degrading the sound of his voice Û°Û
Û°Û or a guitar for no clear reason other than that Û°Û
Û°Û he can. Û°Û
Û°Û Û°Û
Û°Û "Abominable" and "King Korny Remains" open the Û°Û
Û°Û album with simple, picked guitar and vocals that Û°Û
Û°Û are likely to prove the stumbling block for many Û°Û
Û°Û when it comes to the album. The songs are Û°Û
Û°Û minor-key ballads with fragile, emotional vocals; Û°Û
Û°Û Neville is clearly less concerned about accuracy Û°Û
Û°Û than expression. The feeling overall is of Û°Û
Û°Û someone singing to himself, complete with Û°Û
Û°Û occasional finger stumbles and cracking voice. Û°Û
Û°Û "Brawl" is the most straight-forward Û°Û
Û°Û singer/songwriter track here strummed guitar Û°Û
Û°Û and very simple drums comparatively upbeat Û°Û
Û°Û amongst the rest of the album. The odd crackle Û°Û
Û°Û and buzz surrounding the vocals, as if through a Û°Û
Û°Û damaged mic cable, is the only hint of something Û°Û
Û°Û askew. Û°Û
Û°Û Û°Û
Û°Û "Wild Dogs" is different, a mysterious accretion Û°Û
Û°Û of wheezing organ, distant tapping, and garbled Û°Û
Û°Û voice as if listening to someone through a narrow Û°Û
Û°Û heating duct from another house; "Darkpark" Û°Û
Û°Û creates a mood fraught with sadness and loss, Û°Û
Û°Û though its creaky sounds can be a bit much. Û°Û
Û°Û "Worsted" makes four appearances, mixing Û°Û
Û°Û variations of plucked guitar melodies and Û°Û
Û°Û squelchy noises. Some are effectively sparse and Û°Û
Û°Û appealing, while others allow the noises to get Û°Û
Û°Û the upper hand and fall just on the annoying side Û°Û
Û°Û of the border. Û°Û
Û°Û Û°Û
Û°Û The album's keystone, if you will, is the Û°Û
Û°Û 12-minute "Teas Tasting Fair. An epic journey, Û°Û
Û°Û the song is an organ-led lament, slow breaths of Û°Û
Û°Û minor-key notes as Neville sings as if in another Û°Û
Û°Û room, ringing metallic percussion clattering in Û°Û
Û°Û the background. Its melancholy air becomes Û°Û
Û°Û trance-inducing as the minutes pass, until the Û°Û
Û°Û song devolves into clattering, splashing drums Û°Û
Û°Û and cymbals. Now and again the organ emits a Û°Û
Û°Û groan as punctuation. The song is only slightly Û°Û
Û°Û spoiled by its finish, with a couple of Û°Û
Û°Û artificial-sounding cuts and a burst of static Û°Û
Û°Û noise at the very end. Û°Û
Û°Û Û°Û
Û°Û Yeahnahvienna is an occasionally frustrating, Û°Û
Û°Û often charming album. Its charm lies in the Û°Û
Û°Û naked, personal feel of the songs, while the Û°Û
Û°Û frustration comes of self-conscious sabotage, Û°Û
Û°Û lo-fi for its own sake that detracts rather than Û°Û
Û°Û adds to the songs. "Darkpark" doesn't need to be Û°Û
Û°Û artificially distressed when there's so much Û°Û
Û°Û feeling there already, while "Teas Tasting Fair" Û°Û
Û°Û is nicely elegiac until the final gimmickry busts Û°Û
Û°Û the mood. Despite this tendency, however, Neville Û°Û
Û°Û has constructed an intimate, intriguing Û°Û
Û°Û collection, and I'll be looking forward to Û°Û
Û°Û Pumice's continued evolution. Û°Û
