│║ Adrian Vandenberg after 35 years since his last studio ║ │
│║ album as VANDENBERG, returns again with "2020". A new work ║ │
│║ accompanied by a cast of very careful ôgenre monstersö: ║ │
│║ Ronnie Romero (RAINBOW, LORDS OF BLACK, THE FERRYMEN) on ║ │
│║ vocals, Rudi Sarzo (OZZY, WHITESNAKE) on bass and Brian ║ │
│║ Tichy (OZZY, FOREIGNER) to the battery, almost nothing ║ │
│║ friends. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Vandenberg since his beginnings under his surname, has been ║ │
│║ through WHITESNAKE on several occasions, as a substitute ║ │
│║ for John Sykes (bad tongues say that Coverdale felt his ║ │
│║ alpha male ego threatened) after the 1987 masterpiece, in ║ │
│║ the colossal Slip Of The Tongue of the 1989, the less ║ │
│║ fanciful Restless Heart from 1997, plus the acoustic ║ │
│║ Starkers In Tokyo from 1998. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ He formed the outsized MANIC EDEN in 1994 alongside Rudy ║ │
│║ Sarzo, Tommy Aldridge and initially with James Christian of ║ │
│║ HOUSE OF LORDS on vocals. The drift of life led to this not ║ │
│║ being part of the recording of his only self-titled album ║ │
│║ for the benefit of a simply dazzling Ron Young from LITTLE ║ │
│║ CAESAR. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ A long hiatus until reaching the year 2014, when he ║ │
│║ returned to the music scene with VANDENBERGÆS MOONKINGS and ║ │
│║ a return to the sound that is born in its purest form, Hard ║ │
│║ Rock seventies. In this way we have found him recording two ║ │
│║ studio albums plus an authentically delicious acoustic. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In the middle of 2020 he returns to take the reins of his ║ │
│║ band of the 80s, after a great legacy of three albums that ║ │
│║ not only left a great taste in the mouth at the time, but ║ │
│║ for many became cult records. Of course, the wait was worth ║ │
│║ it: the album that I will begin to analyze next, I loved ║ │
│║ it, a little harder than in the 80s, yes, but how could it ║ │
│║ be otherwise, with a great sound of guitars and a excellent ║ │
│║ production, the Dutchman knows perfectly what he does and ║ │
│║ how he wants to reach us today. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Open the album with Shadows Of The Night, a whole ║ │
│║ declaration of intent, a classic Hard Rock hurricane with ║ │
│║ an anthology riff, very powerful and not leaving out more ║ │
│║ melodic parts and their wonderful harmonies. His chorus is ║ │
│║ outstanding where Romero knows how to handle himself ║ │
│║ wonderfully after giving us a demonstration of vocal ║ │
│║ strength in the verses. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ After the great taste in the mouth left by the song that ║ │
│║ opens the album, we find Freight Train, another song loaded ║ │
│║ with a lot of energy, perhaps with more ôrock and rollö ║ │
│║ touches and a great guitar solo, with a lot of skill and ║ │
│║ mastery, where everything remains finished off by a catchy ║ │
│║ chorus that Ronie Romero shapes in an outstanding way. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ After these first two well-moved songs, Hell And High Water ║ │
│║ continues giving us a reminder of DIO's RAINBOW. It is an ║ │
│║ intense halftime with a thunderous guitar in a repetitive ║ │
│║ riff with notes that will go right into our heads, while ║ │
│║ Romero will remind us of the great elf in his performance ║ │
│║ full of strength and elegance. This masterful vocal ║ │
│║ simulation is helped by a rainbow band branding ║ │
│║ environmental keyboards at the end to put the finishing ║ │
│║ touch to this hymn-like cut. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Let It Rain rolls as a more melodic and charming piece in ║ │
│║ all its facets, reminding us of the VANDENBERGs of the 80s. ║ │
│║ The harmonies of this song overflow so much in the vocal ║ │
│║ part, in which Mr. Romero adds all his passion and, ┐ what ║ │
│║ to say about those brilliant and melodic guitars of maestro ║ │
│║ Vandenberg recovering that sound from its beginnings? Well, ║ │
│║ everything together becomes a brilliant theme. At the ║ │
│║ height of its past myth. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ We continue and we find Ride Like The Wind marked by a ║ │
│║ tremendous and addictive rhythm of the master of ceremonies ║ │
│║ where we find Romero marking the vocal times totally torn, ║ │
│║ thus ending in a once again very catchy chorus. Hook from ║ │
│║ the first listen. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Deep into the album, we realize that it is being a work of ║ │
│║ many carats and in order to maintain the level even more, ║ │
│║ Shout is presented to us, which is nothing more than a ║ │
│║ halftime very online from the 70s, simple and with a rhythm ║ │
│║ and somewhat bloody sound. It will delight all lovers of ║ │
│║ that great sound that brings back so many fond memories to ║ │
│║ that era. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Attentive everyone! Because if the previous theme was ║ │
│║ already a nod to the WHITESNAKE of its first stage, with ║ │
│║ Shitstorm, we have before us the ôbombshellö in the purest ║ │
│║ style of those of Coverdale in its golden stage. From the ║ │
│║ first steps of Romero singing, we recognize perfectly, we ║ │
│║ settle in, because it reassures us where the shots are ║ │
│║ going to go. Surely you will say to yourself: FUCK! It ║ │
│║ seems Coverdale and it is that indeed it is all a ║ │
│║ declaration of intentions of tribute in the way of ║ │
│║ interpreting: that of singing feeling and in those details ║ │
│║ of breathing of the master David. All those nuances ║ │
│║ together with good and wavering guitars culminating with a ║ │
│║ tremendous plucking, it will surely lift you from your seat ║ │
│║ to exclaim: ôTemßzoö with two pairs of balls! Yes, yes, ║ │
│║ don't laugh, you'll see! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ After this rush of adrenaline comes Light Up The Sky, ║ │
│║ another hit with airs to the white snake, but with that ║ │
│║ recognizable Slip Of The Tongue guitar sound. If it even ║ │
│║ seems that I have returned to that wonderful year 1989, ║ │
│║ what memories! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ It could not miss in this new album the classic par ║ │
│║ excellence of Mr. VANDENBERG, his mythical ballad Burning ║ │
│║ Heart, where the only thing to object is that it is ║ │
│║ practically a tracing of the original in all its ║ │
│║ parameters, but with that torn and emotionally charged ║ │
│║ touch of Rosemary who will give us goosebumps. Personally, ║ │
│║ its execution has filled me a lot and as it marks all the ║ │
│║ times again in an intense way and with great brightness. ║ │
│║ Note: in the guitar solo we will find some new notes that ║ │
│║ are the small difference that we will find with respect to ║ │
│║ the original. Great version. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ To finish the album, another well-kept track, Skyfall, with ║ │
│║ a melodic and slow start that soon becomes a jet of good ║ │
│║ elegant Hard Rock, with a simple but effective refrain to ║ │
│║ crown this outstanding work by the Dutchman. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In short: Adrian's return in a demonstration of good work, ║ │
│║ with clear ideas, without experiments and with many ║ │
│║ virtues. Much musical level at the compositional service. ║ │
│║ One hundred percent efficiency that is demonstrated in that ║ │
│║ all the songs are good, catchy and without fillers. Echoes ║ │
│║ to the other essential times that the guitarist has gone ║ │
│║ through and, without a doubt, have reinforced his ║ │
│║ projection to edit what is going to be one of the most ║ │
│║ important recordings of this sad year 2020 that will always ║ │
│║ be remembered for this damn pandemic. Now we can add good ║ │
│║ news and it is this great pearl of incunabula value under ║ │
│║ the name of a musician always longed for, VANDENBERG. ║ │
