Stef White and Kersten de Ligny started as an
acoustic duo in 2000. Their music could be
classified as Americana, but they do not want to
feel influenced or restricted by what people mean
by this style.
Stef White listenend to his fair share of old Delta
Blues, Country and Rythm & Blues, like Emmy Lou
Harris and Elmore James. When he was fourteen he
formed his first band. he performed at many small
singer/songwriter venues. In 1999 the final line up
of Stef White & Band stopped performing, looking
for more simplicity in his music. He had toured The
Netherlands for three years and during one of his
gigs he met Kersten de Ligny and they shortly after
formed a duo and have been working together since.
Kersten is a singer/songwriter, born in Amsterdam.
Her personal preference for singer/songwriters from
the 60's and 70's, like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan,
Sandy Denny, but also old jazz by Billie Holiday
and Ella Fitzgerald inspirited her to write and
sing. After having lived in Italy for a few years,
Kersten went back to the Netherlands to focus
solely on music. After studying at the Academic for
Music in Hilversum, she concentrated herself to
writing her own songs and poems. After meeting Stef
White she started to perform live.
Kersten features also on the latest album of the
Dutch singer/songwriter Ad Vanderveen, who has a
huge reputation internationally and worked with
singer/songwriters like David Olney, Iliza Gilkyson
and Iain Matthews.
It doesnÆt all work, and Your Place & Time Will Be
Mine tails off a little towards the end, but
generally-speaking thereÆs much to enjoy here.
Despite borrowing from some obvious influences,
Laudanum makes a decent fist of re-defining 80Æs
synthpop into something uniquely distinctive and
listenable. ThereÆs nothing too clever at work
here, although its simplicity is doubtless
LaudanumÆs strongest card.
