Pick your island. Any island. It might be the western islands off the
coast of Scotland, the Seychelles, Vanuata or Tahiti. In Pete
Lawrence's case it is Naxos, the largest of the Greek Cyclades, that
inspired this project and contributed its own natural sounds,
captured in Pete's own field recordings.
'Beach' certainly isn't the soundtrack to Greece Uncovered. Those who
know The Big Chill know that they like to do it differently. As
Gilles Peterson says "they like to go a little deeper". So put on
the hi-fi or the walkman and prepare for a total chill, beach style.
As ever the music is a diverse selection across the spectrum -
electronic and acoustic - defying genres, blending sounds, layering
textures to create a musical journey that is the Big Chill
Experience.
After the opening rippling Aegean waves to set the tone, the sound of
Sileas floats in - a female harp duo from Scotland, who effortlessly
evoke the spirit of the Hebrides with their opening track, a
delicate and ornate harmonic composition that grabs attention via
its supreme subtlety and gentle Celtic melody.
From there on in, the journey is never less than captivating, moving
through Dome's lush and funky electronica from California, onto
hotter climes with Fila Brazillia's classic treatment of Baaba
Maal's 'Souka Nayo', Dr Rockit's understated accordion house on
'Cafe De Flore', Jessica Lauren's tender Abdullah Ibrahim influenced
piano melody 'A Pearl For Iona', A Reminsicent Drive's evocative
Ibiza vibes interpretation of Coco, Steel and Lovebomb, Jazzanova
spin-off Extended Spirit's criminhally underrated neo-lounge classic
'Solid Water' and the highly acclaimed Zero 7's anthemic remix
reprise of Lamchop's 'Up With The People'.
DJ Food's south sea island inspired deep ambient epic 'Minitoka'
rounds off the album, or so it appears until Bebel Gilberto's
classic 'So Nice (Summer Samba)' brings the listener back to earth
with a smile.
Flights of fancy is what this soundtrack is about - shards of early
evening brightness reflected off the Aegean as you look west across
the sea into the setting sun above Paros. A cool selection of warm
summer vibes drawing the listener in to a space where they can
luxuriate in the afterglow of skilled mood manipulation. A sensory
experience that will leave you feeling far removed from the urban
chaos of London, Sydney, Budapest, Helsinki, New York, Auckland or
