It has gone four years since Unai's first album. Four long years. The
Unai that this spring steps back on the scene with his second album
is quite different from the man we used to know. The abstract
futurism is still there, but somewhere on the way Unai unbuttoned his
shirt and let the pop and the disco in.
Erik M÷ller a.k.a. Unai has from his base in the small town of
Uppsala in Sweden built up a worldwide following for his swinging
minimal house. He's made records for fine labels such as Force
Tracks, Naked Music, Sub Static, Raum...Musik and Punkt Music to name
a few. His album "Rebel swing" from 2001 was nominated for a Swedish
Grammy and earned him a place on many "best of the year"-lists. But
somehow the minimal techno-suit became a size too small. Exit minimal
Puritanism -> enter melancholic Diskotroniks.
A hint of what was to come could be heard in his single from 2003: "I
like your style". A song that increased his following by the size of
a small country's population and reached far beyond the dance floor,
sweeping with it indie/electropop-fans and super-dj's alike.
But it's on this new album that he lets it all out in full bloom. On
"A love moderne" Unai sounds like the unknown lovechild of Pet Shop
Boys' Neil Tennant and Basic Channel's Moritz von Oswald (hell, a
famous German label even compared his voice to that of 80's star
Terence Trent D'arby!). It's about loving aristocratic pop as much as
bunker techno. About believing that these two together makes the most
beautiful of modern love.
The clash is most obvious on cuts like "Heart is to the left",
"Youngkiss" and "Blissful burden", where stripped to the bone
electronics meets heart aching pop head on. But it's also written all
over the face of hits like "Oh you and I" and "I like your style"
too. On top of this you get the cut up futuredisco of "Moderne love"
and "Lucky bastard", not to mention the grand finale of glacial
ambient pop that is "Exit wounds". If there's a wave of techno pop
that slowly but surely has been rising in the last few years, Unai
and "A love moderne" is truly the crest of it.

Troi Torain, known as Star on the "Star & Buc Wild Morning Show" on
Power 105 FM, lost his job after protests by a City Council member and
other elected officials. His remarks about DJ Envy, a DJ for rival
hip-hop station Hot 97, and his family included "I will come for your
kids" and a desire to "do an R. Kelly ... on your little baby girl."
Videotapes in 2002 showed a man resembling singer R. Kelly having sex
with someone who appeared to be an underage girl, then urinating on her.
