With just two solo releases to date, I:Cube became an international
reference for quality electronic music. This mysterious moniker is
the favorite mask of young (26) Parisian composer Nicolas Chaix, an
emblem for the new electronic generation. Nurtured by the whimsical
sound of independant and public Parisian radios suchs as France
Culture, Radio Nova of FG, I:Cube soon discovered the techno sound
of the early nineties and attended the first free parties of the
decade. But this musical education goes way back. At the early age
of 13, Chaix began to improvise and compose musical sketches with
toy keyboards and samplers. The notion of play and the idea that
music is also fun as well childhood reminiscences would from then
on play a pivotal role in his artistic development as is the case
for many electronic greats e.g. Aphex Twin. After taking some drum
lessons and developing his musical talent, I:Cube tried to contact
DJ Gilb*r, then Radio Nova*s selector and DJ, to pass him his
demos. Shortly thereafter, a real musical chemistry between the
outspoken Radio host and the secretive producer is established. In
March 1996, Gilb'r publishes I:Cube*s first EP, Disco Cubizm, on
his fledging Versatile imprint. The EP is an overnight success and
its sales in specialised record and in the electronic underground
are boosted by the stunning B-Side remix courtesy of Daft Punk.
