This albumÆs title clues us in that Fortuner probably isnÆt on a first
name basis with the English language, naturally leading to guesswork as
to where these four lads call home. ItÆs no surprise to find æem with
Germanic names and hailing from the fatherland, which by the great grand
year of Æ86 was also regarded in underground circles as one of metalÆs
most sprawling and mighty kingdoms anywhere. Typically, your three best
guesses for a bandÆs origin were the US, the UK, and Germany, yet what I
feel made Germany even more extraordinary, and itÆs a simple geographic
fact most people seem to lose sight of, is that this mighty kingdom held
dominance over only half the country.
Conversely/ironically/horribly, on one side of the lovely Berlin Wall
was free West Germany. The other side was communist East Germany, where
things were basically the opposite/reverse/all screwed up compared to
the west; a suppressed region of last choices when it came to band
origins, right up there with North Korea and, I dunno, the Isle of Man.
Oddly enough, bands could/had still record(ed) there. Just ask Celtic
Frost, who in æ84 bravely trekked all the way from frigginÆ Switzerland
to record Morbid Tales with ôMadö Horst Muller at BerlinÆs Caet Studio
(but now that IÆm thinkinÆ about it, I believe Noise Records set up that
frozen ælil adventure, no doubt to a lot of band-wide grumbling). Man,
what bands will doà.
Of course very little of this has anything to do with Fortuner. TheyÆre
German. Great.
Okay, of the five or so Teutonic styles of metal sloshing around Æ86,
this fortunate foursome craft songs frequently bearing the royal sonic
insignia of traditionalism a.k.a. traditional heavy metal. Extensive
interest in previous yearsÆ hard rock and earth-anchored metal infuses
the bedrock of ôAll For Freeö, barely rockinÆ ôRock Onö, tiresomely
anthemic ôFight For Your Rightö, and
anthem-to-come-but-would-rather-be-an-average-ballad-with-a-sappy-lighte
r flicking-chorus ôIÆm CominÆ Homeö. Interest - no doubt. Successful
interest - not really. Coincidentally, these specimens are all corralled
onto side two (dubbed side Bronze, while side A is known as Silver), and
itÆs only after halfway through this side that the clouds of confusion
part and I find some blue sky logic in the title Two Sides of the Metal.
While side Bronze predominantly features FortunerÆs most traditional,
heavy rock-rooted works, side Silver had already taken my stereo hostage
with an aggressive and impressive barrage with dispositions ranging from
anxiously up-tempo (ôFire in the Alleyö, ôNeed Some Moreö), energetic
speed metal (ôHeading For Actionö, ôRock Forever Rockö), and a lively
personality in-between (ôIÆm LeavinÆö). ItÆs the side where all double
bass rumbles, where fairly inspired musical dexterity flashes, and where
nearly all the discÆs metal-pure acumen paints the house it lives in a
vivid fire-orange.
Two sides of...ah, you crafty ælil sons æo bitches, playing a goof on us
good people by showcasing your preferred styles on each side instead of
assorting them evenly as every other band in the universe knows to do.
Oh relax, I didnÆt forget you clever devils hid ôSpeedwayö on side
Bronze, an ideally-named instrumental that throws a Silver-like hotfoot
into the albumÆs final three minutes, I guess, yÆknow, so the sideÆs not
a complete waste of what couldÆve totally been a stellar side Gold or at
least a helluva race for the Silver medal.
While guitarist Rudiger Eilts doesnÆt singlehandedly keep side SilverÆs
flame from growing cold, his creatively well-played solos are a pretty
big contribution to its brightness, and drummer brother Jurgen and
bassist Berni Johrmann do their thing to help fan the fire.
Unfortunately, EiltsÆ solos can only reflect so brightly off side
BronzeÆs reserved, commercially-crafted and flatly-colored surface,
meanwhile the same rhythm section canÆt continue playing its heart out
handcuffed to the railing. Vocalist Hartmut BleumerÆs mid-sized tenor is
on this side of formidable and is performed acceptably, yet he fails to
distance himself from many frontmen, German or elsewhere, milling around
the middle of the pack. For the record, however, he uncorks a little
more pizzazz to celebrate the silver race runners.
Disappointingly, Two Sides of the Metal goes from riches to rags in a
recordÆs flip time, but ôSpeedwayö luckily keeps an entire side from
completely collecting dust like yer fatherÆs old bronzed baby shoes.
Nevertheless, my opinion of this particular Jekyll nÆ Hyde disc is
obviously split, for I canÆt throw half down a well without the other
half drowning. ItÆs actually a 60/40 split IÆd rather keep dry not only
to preserve its pleasing victories, but for its fair collectibility.
Where these guys drifted off to after Æ86 is anyoneÆs guess.
