Post Mortem, Black Death, Mysto Dysto, Macabre, Impaler, Black Hole and
Necrophagia (US-OH) were all fairly abnormal bands for their times. As
none of them really spawned a style or demi-genre (save MacabreÆs
diminutive world of murder metal, which we wonÆt count here), they
simply capitalized on the surrounding surge of sounds already plowing
things asunder; a din with a reasonably widespread base and, in the
undergroundÆs pressure cooker, a commotion that continued being
concocted with expanding appeal. All that these acts did were take some
rules of thumb, break them in one or two places, and throw away the
splint. Ah yes, easier said than done. We've all heard peculiar vocals
take an entire project and sail it clean off metal's main causeway.
Abruptly weird experimentation mid-stride through an album has
orchestrated more than a few communication breakdowns between bands and
possible audiences. Least commonly, or rather less commonly, bands
bearing stage personas that for whatever reason are right away deemed
questionable by the metal masses ultimately discover just how resistible
they are. For one reason or another, this inbred flair for abnormality
fuels the carnival of curious idiosyncrasies the oddity bands above more
or less belong to. Deliverance, on the other hand, is mind and body more
deformed, and while I'm sure they're quite aware of this deformity, I'm
almost just as sure its barely noticed by the band. After hearing these
guys, some could better imagine an origin story being triggered by a
trickle of DNA-altering chemical dripping from a cracked test tube onto
their expecting mum's skin who didn't notice while doing her pre-birth
breathing exercises.
Yeah, Deliverance is strange. Look no further than the friggin album
cover, folks.
Though English, the four-piece perform like theyÆre from the wrong side
of Germany, ears pressed desperately against the wall as if unwilling to
miss any morsel of ambiguous, nameless, accidental metal in danger of
escaping through the cracks. Either that or like some hapless,
music-starved two-piece from Romania. Musically, Deliverance stitch
together leftover body parts taken from Warfare, Venom, structured
N.M.E., and pre-debut Voivod, then power these scraps with something
resembling BulldozerÆs goofily-grim soul, but show little experience in
how to be severe, at best an idea largely meandered around û a golem
with no inner compass. Or just playing naturally bad. Maybe they were
pristinely clueless. Or were they just being foxy about the whole thing?
One thing beyond denying is that they knew their topical trajectory well
and rang the devilÆs dinner bell with timely presentation. With a
guitarist called Sin, the eight-tracker being ærecorded in the Pit of
Doom' (on Christmas, apparently), being æproduced by the Satan
BrothersÆ, and rounding things out with the back cover slogan 'for every
copy sold is another soul bought', all's perfectly logical within the
mindset crackling behind its lateÆ86/early Æ87 recording date. ItÆs only
natural that Christian-kicking lyrics abound, practically unreadable in
MetalworkÆs garish font that main mouthpiece Master Daniels throws
around in dirty, ultra-echoed demon swirl like Bulldozer's AC Wild
dueting with a croup-infected Ape De Martini of Oz , ravaging the likes
of ôDeliveranceö, ôRotten to the Coreö and ôKilling for Jesusö with all
kinds of deliberate chaos.
The same malicious heart indeed beats behind all of these tracks, yet
musically the shades of black are estranged. Scratchily-riffed finale
ôTwenty One Steps to Hellö barely takes a breath in its 7+ minute
calamitous stride as uncultivated solos whip around for seemingly half
the time, meanwhile odd guitar nÆ vocal-only intermissions announce the
set of coming verses. In front of that is the title cut, with its
uncanny, um, chant that survives via a weirdly anthemic,
mechanically-twisted chorus that seems more on par with the further
invoked ôRotten to the Coreö and ôKilling for Jesusö. Then in the
presence of ôYour Deathö and opener ôDesireö, Deliverance can sound like
they won BulldozerÆs The Day of Wrath album at a grab bag raffle, then
took it home and tried to assimilate it to the pop carriage of Black
WidowÆs eerily happy Satanic hymn ôCome to the Sabbatö.
But the best part of this album is its cover, little Terri now probably
37 years old and for all we know a kindergarten teacher, a star only in
chilly, secretive circles where Devils Meat stirs a cauldron of
quasi-original, backward, sideshow reproach, and it only tastes good
when you're really sick of eating the same spread.
