æKEN THE MENÆ EP
PUNCHFUNK
RELEASED TBC
Fergie has had one roller coaster of a young life.
As dance musicÆs biggest personality, heÆs never
far from the kind of controversy thatÆs part and
parcel of rock n roll û and the club scene is far
the better for it. Fresh from a year spent rocking
dancefloors here in the UK and abroad, the odd
support date with the likes of Moby, and further
making his Radio 1 show the one-stop shop for
underground, quality music of varying styles,
IrelandÆs favourite son is about to make the next
leap in his already highly successful career, and
2006 is set to be his biggest year to date.
Now renowned for his cutting edge ætechnoÆ infused
sets (for want of a better pigeonhole, read that
as intelligent, hard, and energetic dancefloor
fare), Fergie is now ready to unleash his next
productions. Musically, itÆs the kind of sound
youÆll find lodged firmly in his record box, but
with the no-holds-barred energy that you get from
one of dance musicÆs strongest characters.
æKen The MenÆ sounds like the bastard son of
PlastikmanÆs æSpasticÆ and Alter EgoÆs finest
moments from the 90Æs Harthouse era. It heads
straight for the middle of 21st century
dancefloors for a rawkus journey through heavy
percussion and dischordant synth stabs, chucking
in the odd breakdown for good measure.
FergieÆs own remix keeps the basics of the
original, but toughens up the bassline for a
chunkier outing peppered with hi-end drum rolls.
Also on the package is a stunning rerub from
rising tech stars, Tolfrey & Sylvester. Fresh from
their recent outing on Crosstown Rebels, they
strip down æKen The MenÆ into a pulsating m*****l
epic that sounds like an illicit three-way between
Pac Man, a modem and an Atari.
