Release Notes:
Nosferatu (1988 to Date)
Bands simply don't get much more openly Gothic than Nosferatu, so it's only
fitting with live dates brewing that a band continually active during the 90's
and not ashamed of their roots or dark passions are thrust back into the harsh
spotlight. Having achieved album sales during that decade which most Goth bands
these days would simply find impossible, this retrospective, mainly covering the
mid-90's 'Rise' / 'Legend' album pairing (long since unavailable), makes a
perfect sister companion to 'The Hades Years' compilation.
It's all here, with the lightly twisted romance between agile, capricious
guitar-led Gothic Rock and restfully romantic keyboard atmospherics. What makes
their sound survive well is that their drama was tight and never, considering
the flamboyant image, overblown on record, and they kept their music melodically
accessible by sidelining morose introspection, giving their rock an upright
bravado. Having established their own character they also kept to their own
sound without copping out and suckling the carcasses of either The Sisters of
Nephilim like the majority. My God, you can never understand these words!
In this new era of Goth, where stylistic and creative antecedents are diluted by
an all-embracing electronic masquerade, or deceitful/apologetic 'dark'
alternatives it's good to have something reliably honest and upfront, working
with enticement and cool confidence, involving what makes Goth Gothic.
