New York City is full of bands en thrall to yesteryear, to the Velvet
Underground, CBGBs, Nico and KatzÆs Delicatessen. Many of these bands think that
simply walking the cityÆs streets will insure success, others know that hard
work, talent and luck is required to climb this townÆs fabled heap and arrive
not only unscathed, but owning that tiny bit of musical real estate. Add to the
short list for heap domination, Murder Mystery, a three piece who turn far flung
influences into something fresh and exceedingly promising.
Guitarist/singer/songwriter Jeremy Coleman certainly enjoys dealing in irony,
and his songs are anything but reserved. Like a brilliant cross between Tom
Verlaine and Buddy Holly with a nod to Buck OwenÆs guitarist Don Rich, Coleman
sings in a nasally tenor, his songs a compact jolt to the senses that fly high
with melody, sting quickly with a blinding guitar solo, then quickly burn out.
Support by drummer Laura Coleman and bassist Adam Fels is empathetic, thrifty,
and direct, just like JeremyÆs songs.
This self released four song EP begins with ôHoney Come Home,ö a massive 6/8
groove shifting under lyrics about teen lust offset by sweet background vocals
and an unsuspecting middle eight. Coleman rips a solo worthy of ôOld Brown Shoe
Georgeö era Harrison and soon we are into the up-tempo rumble of C&W kicker,
ôThink of Me.ö ColemanÆs gift for melody is obvious here, his subtle Buddy Holly
allusions and gentle finger-picking adding to the songÆs dry rock and roll wit.
Still in his mid 20s, Coleman is a mature songwriter bursting with inspiration
and ideas. ôWho DoesnÆt Wanna Give Me Love?,ö a song that can have only been
written by an eternal optimist, charges over double time drumming while asking,
ôAre you ready for a heartache cause here it comes?ö ôIn A Sentimental Mood,ö a
crowd favorite, closes this brief set and itÆs got nothing to do with Duke
Ellington. By now Murder MysteryÆs trademark is established: warm group
harmonies and cohesive instrumentation, frenetically hot guitar solos, and
ColemanÆs memorable melodies. If this band continues to mature at their present
rate, they will be a mystery no more.
