It's lovely to see another cd appearing from the Make Mine
Music label (home of dreamy shoegazers Epic45) - here
releasing an electronic record that really tries its best not
to sound like electronica at all... or possibly it's a rock
record that is trying desperately to be electronic -- I can't
really tell. Anyhow -- this Bristol based duo have been
busying themselves releasing 7"s and EPs for years now and The
Beijing of Our Career is their long-awaited debut full length.
There's something about their unusual sound that's endearing
-- the 'live' sound, the un-effected drum machine cycles and
the vintage synths. It's kind of what Plone would sound like
if they were hanging out with Aphex Twin for a few weeks.
Strangely though, these grubby upbeat tracks are randomly
punctuated by dreamy ambient pieces, processed piano and
treated field recordings, making for a varied, involving
listen.
