█ "Discussion about the futility of Var?se's short █
█ releases should cease here, simply because 30 █
█ minutes of this Goldsmith score is far more than █
█ enough to satisfy any film music fan. In fact, █
█ it's hard to find original and genuinely exciting █
█ music from the selections that do appear on this █
█ release. Much like the film itself, the score is █
█ impotent and fails to provide anything more than █
█ relentless chasing music.
The main brass theme █
█ that is heard on the first track is not very █
█ distinguishable from the non-stop, stock action █
█ music the follows it. The brass used by Goldsmith █
█ here is devoid of any grandeur --it tends more to █
█ the whiny, high-pitched, harsh brass instead of █
█ the solid performances heard in his themes for The █
█ Edge or The Shadow. For the remainder of the █
█ score, Goldsmith seemingly makes a second use of █
█ action cues from his previous recent scores. Much █
█ of it can be characterized by its similarity to █
█ the worst moments of last summer's Air Force One. █
█ In other words, most of the tracks you skip past █
█ on Air Force One constitute the style of U.S. █
█ Marshals. Goldsmith does not employ any █
█ substantial use of synthesizers or strings that █
█ could possibly make this score more unique. As is, █
█ the overbearing percussion, choppy strings, and █
█ disruptive brass make this score difficult to █
█ listen to.As usual, however, Goldsmith saves a █
█ complete loss by entertaining a thematically █
█ endowed final track. The finale sequence, as █
█ Gerard releases Roberts in front of the █
█ courthouse, includes the only coherent theme that █
█ combines all sections of the orchestra and █
█ synthesizers. Unfortunately, it is too little, too █
█ late, and U.S. Marshals joins Deep Rising as a █
█ testament to Goldsmith's slow start in 1998. Not █
█ to worry, though --if you recall Fierce Creatures █
█ last year, Goldsmith has a tendency to start each █
█ recent year slowly and create his masterpieces in █
█ summer and fall. " █
