"Qui Perd Gagne! (Loser Takes All!), written and directed by
Laurent Benegui, is a comedy based around lovers who make their
living out of gambling; Jacques, a professional gambler, and Angele
a cop who investigates gambling fraud. A maths teacher, who claims
to have a system, wins the Lottery a number of times in a row, so
everyone quickly stops betting causing the Lottery to become
bankrupt. To try to find how he is "cheating", Angele employs the
devious mind of her lover, Jacques. The film comes with a charming
score from Laurent Coq, who has less than a handful of scores on
his CV, despite his first soundtrack for Mauvais Genre (also for
Benegui) appearing in 1999; but this is a gem that was worth
waiting for. Amelie Aime Le Cinema, the specialist French
soundtrack label, have issued this feel-good, jazz based score as
part of their series of albums featuring music from contemporary
French films.
The album opens with a gorgeous big band, jazz vocal "Loser Takes
All", sung by Allen Hoist, which sets an upbeat mood that is
wonderfully reflected by the score. The score cues are a fun
combination of busy orchestral music and light jazz. From the first
track, "Tous Les Casinos Du Monde" the music has a vibrant energy
that is endearing and uplifting. Some cues are more sombre and
meditative, like "Compete Sur Moi" and "Oncle", but most are
exciting, colourful with a humourous streak, like "Jacques Loirot"
and "Chiffres", although there are a few, like "Bienvenue Dans La
Maison" and "Lilou / La Recre", that border on the romantic and
sentimental. One of the many outstanding cues is "7 Millions Et
Demi D'Euros" which starts with a light, airy refrain and ends with
a dramatic, crashing finale. While many of the cues are short (four
are less than 30s) the music fits together well and the whole album
has a fresh, entertaining ambience throughout.
Laurent Coq's music for Qui Perd Gagne ! is a really enjoyable
listen with enough changes in mood to keep the everyone happy. The
intimate orchestral arrangements and the jazz seasoning make this a
score that will appeal to those that enjoy their music with an easy
