fragment opera is a project by marina rosenfeld mixing music
performed from original vinyl and acetate records, and video
and photographs having to do with a series of landscapes. the
forest, the garden, and the sea are the names of individual or
series of discs associated with each landscape in the project
to date. in performance, they are played simultaneously and in
various sequences, modified with pins or nails in the surface
to produce temporary loops, and gradually altered by the
introduction of effects, either by an ensemble of turntable
operators or in a multi-turntable solo version performed by
mr.

REVIEWS
this concept ambient album consists of two tracks. track one
(41:40) is the title track. this is the live portion of the
cd, recorded in vienna, austria in 1998. here marina
orchestrates vinyl and acetate records and effects to produce
a floating, organic piece. the images summoned here sympathize
with the blended title: a wave washing over a beach subtly
changes the sandy shore; a breeze circulating through the
leafy branches delicately effects the very woods themselves.
so rosenfeld's influence on the spinning records summons an
amorphous vision. she recreates this atmospheric, diaphanous,
ethereal soundscape in the studio for the second track,
"theseatheforestthegarden." several other musicians help out.
brought in to the astral projection are such archaic wave
benders as the galbraith analog synth and the romero
copperwire-feedback-reverb-machine. theforestthegardenthesea
is a quiescent, serene and fully textured communing with
nature through studio antiques.

marina rosenfeld makes futuristic music by rummaging the past.
she assembles her music from old records, both vinyl and
acetate (the latter format┤s quick-decaying qualities ensure
that no two spins are alike). where someone like christian
marclay or otomo yoshihide revels in jump cuts and split
second transition, rosenfeld prefers to build slowly evolving
sound sprawls from layers of surface noise, turntable rumble,
and looped bits of actual (but rarely identifiable) music. on
the second of the album┤s two tracks (both recorded live in
real time, both lasting over a half hour, both quite gorgeous)
she┤s joined by half a dozen confederates playing more records
and a couple synthesizers, yet the number of performers seems
entirely divorced from the density of the resulting sound
wave. on both tracks rosenfeld┤s overlapping layers of hums,
whines, crackles, and beats envelope the listener in an
electrified haze not unlike city lights reflected off of
moisture-pregnant clouds.
