Deviltook are a band from Spain that plays a very anti religious and
Nordic inspired form of old school black metal and this is a review of
their self released 2020 album "At War With Gods".
A very fast and raw sound starts off the album along with a great amount
of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly high pitched black
metal screams while the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's
second wave Norwegian tradition and all of the musical instruments also
have a very powerful sound to them.
A small amount of dark sounding melodies can also be heard in some of
the guitar riffing while one track also introduces clean playing onto
the recording. Some tracks also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid
paced and fast parts along with the guitar leads also being done in a
very melodic style when they are utilized, cinematic sounds can also be
heard briefly on a couple of tracks as well as the music focusing more
on a heavier or raw style.
Deviltook plays a style of black metal that is very raw and old school
in the early 90's tradition. The production sounds very professional
while the lyrics cover the lies caused by the Christian religion.
In my opinion Deviltook are a very great sounding raw and old school
black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should
check out this album.

The very fact that metal is as widespread as it is across the globe is a
very fun thing because we get to see bands from more well-known places
like Sweden to the US and lesser-known like Chile and India have
material thatÆs more than worth diving into. Spain doesnÆt get as much
credit as it deserves as it has a wide variety that everyone can find
something to latch onto whether itÆs scathing black metal or pulverizing
death metal or just about anything else. With their debut album,
Deviltook brings further glory to the Spanish black metal scene in ten
unyielding tracks.
Made up of many people from all over the scene from reputable bands like
Itnuveth and Aposento (just to only name two), there wasnÆt any doubt in
my mind that DeviltookÆs first effort wouldnÆt smash. And smash it did!
Right from the very beginning, ôAt War With Godsö tells you right away
everything that youÆre going to see in this album: straight forward
black metal with fiery riffs abound and an unmerciful approach to
everything in sight. Nothing new whatsoever, but to say that Deviltook
didnÆt do it fantastically well all throughout these ten tracks would be
practically criminal. This is some of the best black metal of this kind
that IÆve heard since first discovering Ende from their neighboring
country of France, and Deviltook absolutely runs with this album in the
best possible way. Covering just about the entire board of what straight
forward black metal like this can cover, ôAt War With Godsö delivers on
every front that a fan of this style could ever possibly ask for as they
never once shy away from embracing the tropes and pulling them off with
clear mastery and an understanding of the craft that is virtually a
given when talking about musicians as deep in the world of metal as
these guys. ItÆs done magnificently with practically no weak spots
throughout the entirety of ôAt War With Godsö such that itÆs not a
stretch to call it one of the most potent works that IÆve heard from
Spain in some time.
ItÆs one thing to create black metal of any sort but to do it well is to
really succeed where countless others have tried and failed to a great
degree, but Deviltook proves to be a cut above the rest in fantastic
fashion and unyielding power to match. So much of ôAt War With Godsö
exudes excellence that only quality black metal can bring to the table,
and this band brings it in absolute spades.
