2016 was an excellent year for Old School Death Metal filled to the brim
with top class releases. That being said it took 2 more years for me to
discover another gem that is easily among the best releases û not only
from that year but of the whole genre. Even more impressive is the fact
that this is the first record by this young German squadron laying waste
to the DM landscape.
I read in an interview that the guys from Scalpture are not that happy
to call their style OSDM. I hope they forgive me but ôPanzerdoktrinö
could serve as prime example for anybody asking for a definition of that
particular genre. Most of the songs are kept in mid-tempo with stoic and
buzz-sawing trademark riffs accompanied by some atmospheric lead guitar
work lending the album quite a hooky vibe. There is enough variation to
the basic chords to give each song its own identity. A few
blast-sections have been implemented as well as some very laid-back ones
in which the putridity of the music is slowly dripping out of the
speakers. Especially those parts help ramping up the intensity of the
music creating an eerie mood.
While the instrumentation is top notch there are no flashy or overly
technical sections. From the first note onwards it is pretty obvious
that the intention of Scalpture has been to take some of the best pieces
of the genre and put them back together while injecting a little bit of
their own DNA. There is nothing really new or innovative here but the
music is just so powerful and fresh that I really do not care about
that. The songwriting is compact and on point without any unnecessary
lengths or boring parts. The tracks flow into each other in nice fashion
making the 35 minutes go by without noticing.
One of the biggest weapons in ScalptureÆs arsenal for sure is singer
Thorsten. His tone reminds me a bit of a more angry version of Martin
van Drunen but there are also hints of other great vocalists like e.g.
Ola Lindgren. His delivery is brutal and intense but at the same time
each word can be perfectly understood. His volume and range make him
stand on par with the big names of the genre.
Another highlight has to be the production which is raw and filthy but
also powerful at the same time. The guitar tone is crunchy and the drums
sound punchy and organic. Even the bass has not been buried in the mix
so each detail is fully audible.
I really have a hard time finding any flaws on ôPanzerdoktrinö.
Everybody looking for something new or innovative might have come to the
wrong place. That being said any OSDM aficionado like myself just
looking for some straight forward DM thrills to blow through his ears
would do himself a disservice by letting this record pass by. It really
is that good.

Founded in 2009, German death metallers Scalpture have taken the years
to hone and refine a vicious death metal charge hailing their old-school
sound into vicious bursts of death metal over the years which has honed
and refined their attack into a lethal war-themed force. Adding second
guitarist Tobias to the group for this release, the groupsÆ full-length
debut is released December 1, 2016 on Final Gate Records.
From the start, itÆs quite apparent that the bandsÆ old-school
influences are getting shown at the forefront of the groupsÆ overall
sound here. The basic intention here is the classic churning
Swedish-style sound complete with that familiar grinding buzzsaw-style
blast to the riff-work which offers a fine series of stylistic changes
as the tempos offer up the traditional blend of galloping up-tempo
thrash-paced styles to more mid-tempo chugging throughout here. Those
mid-tempo paces are where the band explores the vast majority of times
here and comes complete with the usual sense of sprawling patterns and
melodic trinkling sprinkled throughout to add to a fine old-school sense
of straightforwardness to the rhythms that keeps things simple, vicious
and intense. When the band drops that in favor of the ravenous,
blistering up-tempo work it fares quite well with the swirling patterns
and melodic accents generating the kind of atmosphere that keeps this
one charging along into that old-school vein which really gives this one
a lot to really like about it. However good it may be, though, doesnÆt
change the fact that the music here is pretty much reliant on that
atmosphere to such a degree that thereÆs no real originality present in
the attack at all. The riffs, pattern arrangements and even the melodic
interjections are cribbed straight from the Stockholm playbook and
replicated with earnest and competent performances that really makes
this one feel like numerous other bands in the style. ItÆs not
detrimental in the slightest due to the enjoyment found within this as
the music is well-played enough to make a difference, and again as a
debut feature that doesnÆt become as big a factor as it really couldÆve
been.
Despite not offering up a truly original thought all that often
throughout here, the sheer earnestness and competency of their chosen
style to utilize the Swedish old-school sound makes them quite an
intriguing rookie to watch in the scene and really gives this one a
strong appeal to Swedish-style death metal fanatics or old-school death
aficionados in general.
