DAWN "THE FAUN" MCCARTHY was raised in Spokane,Washington. Her parents were two
piano teachers from Chicago. Among a large family, she was weaned on Yma Sumac,
Heintje, Led Zeppelin, and piano music. Dawn has been singing her songs onstage
since 1991.
FAUN FABLES began in 1997 when Dawn left the bands and cabarets of New York
City, traveling and singing solo in Europe. The first Faun Fables album was
recorded after this in 1998, called EARLY SONG. "These were the first songs I
attempted as a soloist."
MOTHER TWILIGHT (2001), a map of songs for the underworld, was hand glued and
pedalled to several folks along the interstates and country roads of North
America 2001-2003, gathering the attention of Drag City Records in Chicago.
In 2002, the Faun Fables musical theater show THE TRANSIT RIDER premiered in San
Francisco, inspired by Dawn's existential years in NYC. The soundtrack will be
released in the near future, along with a revision of the show.
FAMILY ALBUM (2004) was the Drag City debut, "a nice, gangly portrait of what my
creative world had been in recent times," including family members and some of
the rich, artistic community of the Bay Area, California.
When not working Faun Fables solo, her main partner in crime is NILS FRYKDAHL, a
fantastical and shapeshifting artist who's been dropping jaws since the late
1980's with IDIOT FLESH and currently Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Some other
collaborators include - Matt Waldron ( irr. app. (ext.) ) and family members
Sheila McCarthy, Brian McCarthy and her mom, Michelina.
Dawn is a student of folklore; housekeeping, wild foods gathering, theater,
dance and underworld tradition. She enjoys tours filled with adventure, local
history, landscape, homecooked meals & good conversation. She is currently based
in Oakland, California.
This selection of songs draws from a theme that began in 1994 - when Dawn was
introduced to the complete world of the NYC subway in all its repetitious and
transient glory and began writing about it. It was made into a full length
theater show in 2002 in San Francisco, aided by the inspiration & work of
director Allen Willner and a cast of thirteen. Since then The Transit Rider has
seen more roadways and sunsets and has enjoyed further songwriting & development
by Dawn and Nils, plus collaborations with Dawn's mother Michelina Tyrie
('Earths Kiss') and a poem by her dad Will McCarthy ('I No Longer Wish To')
written during his last days as a stock broker. This Transit Rider also
incorporates into its setting songs from Zygmunt Konieczny (Taki Pejzaz/Such a
Landscape), Soeur Sourire (Je Voudrais/I'd like to Be), and the Anglo Saxon
traditional 'House Carpenter.'
