         █░█    Once upon a time there was a girl named Lana and   █░█
         █░█    a boy named Cam. They met while attending the      █░█
         █░█    University of Calgary. While hanging out in Cam's  █░█
         █░█    apartment one summer evening, they decided to      █░█
         █░█    write some songs. A few months later Cam moved to  █░█
         █░█    a new house. One of his new room mates, Lara, was  █░█
         █░█    a singer. One night during a practice, a boy       █░█
         █░█    named Blair who was visiting the house decided to  █░█
         █░█    join the band. The rest...is herstory. Who are     █░█
         █░█    the boygirls? They don't drive fancy cars, they    █░█
         █░█    can't afford expensive jewellery, and they're not  █░█
         █░█    in to starting "beef" with other artists (Lana     █░█
         █░█    doesn't even eat red meat). They're a band that    █░█
         █░█    writes songs about social issues. While some       █░█
         █░█    might say that their electronic sounds, Afro-beat  █░█
         █░█    bass lines, funky guitar riffs, and female vocals  █░█
         █░█    do not fit with the "hip hop scene", they          █░█
         █░█    disagree. Says co-founder May, "If you think       █░█
         █░█    about it, hip hop started off as being             █░█
         █░█    anti-establsihment. We don't fit the mainstream    █░█
         █░█    scene and given our lyrical content, we're         █░█
         █░█    anti-establishment so I guess we're hip hop".      █░█
         █░█    Adds Bentley, "When people criticize us it only    █░█
         █░█    makes us stronger. So bring on the boygirl         █░█
         █░█    bashing!". The band has quickly made a name for    █░█
         █░█    iteself and has fans in some very unlikely         █░█
         █░█    places. Their lyrics and committment to social     █░█
         █░█    issues have found them fans in the arts            █░█
         █░█    community, queer community and feminist            █░█
         █░█    community. Not your typical hip hop audience. But  █░█
         █░█    that's fitting for a group that is not your        █░█
         █░█    typical hip hop band.                              █░█
