█ │ It's hard to believe that this is the first │ █
█ │ solo album by one of New Zealand's most revered │ █
█ │ singer-songwriters. With over two and a half │ █
█ │ decades of musical output behind him - from │ █
█ │ early chart forays with his 'agit-punk' band │ █
█ │ Blam Blam Blam in the 80s, through to the │ █
█ │ critically acclaimed work with │ █
█ │ music/theatre/film duo of The Front Lawn, and │ █
█ │ then to the chart-topping success of The │ █
█ │ Muttonbirds through the 90s as well as film and │ █
█ │ television soundtrack work in the intervening │ █
█ │ years, including the successful No. 2 │ █
█ │ soundtrack earlier this year - McGlashan has │ █
█ │ consistently produced songs that have not only │ █
█ │ achieved popular and critical success, they │ █
█ │ have, in many cases, become part of New │ █
█ │ Zealand's cultural psyche. │ █
█ │ And it's likewise hard to not think that this │ █
█ │ trend won't continue with this latest outing. │ █
█ │ Although ostensibly a 'solo' album, the │ █
█ │ recruitment of Sean Donnely (aka SJD) on bass, │ █
█ │ drummer Russ Burge (The Muttonbirds) and steel │ █
█ │ guitar player extraordinaire John Segovia as │ █
█ │ the core band for these recordings has resulted │ █
█ │ in an amazingly strong and complementary group │ █
█ │ for what is a fantastic collection of │ █
█ │ McGlashan's typically melancholy and emotive │ █
█ │ songs. With the combined production skills of │ █
█ │ McGlashan and SJD and the increasingly renowned │ █
█ │ Ed Cake (who was at the helm during the initial │ █
█ │ recording of the album), the end result is an │ █
█ │ album that sounds lush and full. McGlashan and │ █
█ │ his cohorts have been given a rich palette from │ █
█ │ which they've created a collection of songs │ █
█ │ that will sit comfortably alongside his │ █
█ │ collected work so far. From the opening track - │ █
█ │ "This is London" - an uplifting and instantly │ █
█ │ memorable song many a homesick Kiwi will │ █
█ │ identify with - McGlashan continues to blur the │ █
█ │ lines between songwriter and storywriter, with │ █
█ │ a collection of tunes that paint vivid pictures │ █
█ │ of the characters and events portrayed: a │ █
█ │ drug-runner in 'Courier', a bus-driver in │ █
█ │ 'Passenger 26', a New York executive feeling │ █
█ │ guilt (and relief at not getting caught) for │ █
█ │ the deaths in the 'Toy Factory Fire'. │ █
█ │ Front Lawn and Muttonbirds fans will already be │ █
█ │ looking forward to this release, and with good │ █
█ │ cause. For those not already fans of those │ █
█ │ bands, we can but recommend this release as an │ █
█ │ excellent way to start exploring the musical │ █
█ │ output of one of NZ's finest singer-songwriters │ █
