When it comes to the music business, Marlin Greene has nearly done it all.
He has worked as an engineer, producer, guitarist, bass player,
songwriter/composer, backup vocalist, and recording artist. He performed
with the Muscle Shoals Studio Band, playing guitar on the Percy Sledge hit,
"When A Man Loves A Woman". He worked with Leon Russell, Don Nix, and the
Alabama State Troupers Road Show and their southern, gospel-tinged rock; he
engineered and produced Boz Scaggs, John Hammond, Duane Allman; he also
worked with Mickey Newbury, Lonnie Mack, Bonnie Bramlett, just to name a
few. He was also married, for a time, to backup singer and recording artist
Jeannie Greene.
In the midst of all this work for others, he put out one solo album,
"Tiptoe Past The Dragon", in 1972. It is a collection of gently, almost
sweetly sung country/folk/rock songs, all written by Greene (two co-writes
with Wayne Perkins). In one sense, the album is of an era (barely
post-hippie, e.g., 'Gemini Gypsy' and 'Forest Ranger') but the songs, owing
in large part part to GreeneÆs great arrangements, still resonate today,
forty years later.
This album is one of a significant group of recordings that helped make the
transition from pop schlock and cloying country to that literate amalgam of
folk, country, and rock created by the likes of Seatrain, Jerry Hahn
Brotherhood, Earth Opera on the rock side and Jerry Jeff Walker, Michael
Martin Murphey, and Jimmy Buffett on the country folk side. People like
Townes Van Zandt, Jackson Browne, John David Souther, Danny O'Keefe,
Jonathan Edwards, Don Henley and Glenn Frey, Dave Loggins, Randy Sharp, Jim
Pulte, Mickey Newbury, and many others began producing intelligent,
complex, thoughtful music in the guise of laid back rock and roll.
GreeneÆs album is an excellent offering from that milieu. There is a
spiritual bent to several of his songs, including the obvious "Good
Christian Cowboy", but the extended metaphor of the song makes it
interesting, even if, like me, you are not inclined toward the religious
content. Like the work of the brilliant songwriters Jesse Winchester or
Bruce Cockburn, the religion serves the song.
This is swamp rock with folk-rock and country flavors, and it s one of
1972's great lost albums.
