In the worldwide metal community, South America is known as a breeding
ground for some of the most feral and brutally primitive bands around.
It has been seen over the years that countries with few creative
outlets, coupled with poor living conditions, often produce bands with
an urgent, ferocious approach, usually with an incredibly frank and
honest lyrical sensibility. All of these qualities come to the fore in
the music of Squad, whoÆs lone cassette release ôGallinazeous Deathö has
gone on to become a collectors item, cited as being the most bootlegged
recording in Chilean extreme music.
These days, Squad is seen as a pioneering act, and is considered to be
the first crossover band from a Latin American country. However, much of
the time bands that try to forge a new style in their respective
homeland are often unpolished, and lacking in cohesion. Take for example
Hellhammer, who have had a lasting influence despite their obvious flaws
in performance, while on the South American front you have Sarcofago,
who were dangerously ahead of the extreme metal curve, though often
sloppy and unfocused. SquadÆs music is very much the result of a group
of guys trying to do something different and creative within the strict
confines of military dictatorship, and while they succeed on many
fronts, they can be extremely easy to criticize.
After a brutal, mosh inflected intro, the band rips into gear with ôCuma
Aggressionö, a potent mix of deadly thrash riffs and hardcore gang vocal
choruses. A similar method of attack is used for most of the release,
with verses usually leaning more to the thrash metal spectrum, and
choruses showcasing their hardcore roots. The title track has a classic
Oi! punk feel to it with some of their most melodic riffing, though some
may dislike the outright punkiness of the track. Tracks like ôPuercosö
and ôWimpyö display the heavy influence of the Dirty Rotten LP, who
Squad is probably most comparable to, though elements of C.O.C. are
often noticeable. ôGenocide Dawnö is definitely one of the strongest
songs on display; with a sense of real life urgency that takes flight
with a brutal mosh section featuring the repeated chant of GENOCIDE!
ôOjo E Polloö features some highly dissonant jamming and some humorous
vocal interplay using the lyrics of the title track along with some
spoken word bit about the governorÆs wife and donkey shows. The bands
signature song ôMuerte A Los Hippiesö is a slamming indictment of hippie
culture, played to the tune of militaristic snare rolls, and is a
perfect summation of the bandÆs attitude.
Much like CroatiaÆs original thrash/speed merchants Devastation, Squad
is high on energy and enthusiasm, but seriously lacking in finesse. Also
like Devastation, it is clear the band are playing horribly cheap
equipment, and the bands biggest and most noticeable flaw is their
inability to keep their instruments in tune, which would probably be the
deciding turn off factor for most listeners, especially metal heads who
donÆt spin equal amounts of punk. Much of their music comes off as more
dissonant than it really is because of this flaw, but does make some
sections seem much more eerie.
Squad does have their strengths though, one of which is the ferocious
vocal performance of Flack, whose accent and fiery Latin delivery is so
brutal, he would not have been out of place in just about any 80Æs death
metal band. The backing vocal delivery is also strong, with a more
cackling, punky snarl that serves as a good contrast to the roaring of
Flack. The rhythm section is pretty tight overall, but the lead guitar
is of particular note. While being far from astounding, it does feature
equal parts ripping noise thrash and catchy, almost rock and roll licks.
The recording quality is surprisingly good for a bandÆs first effort,
and could be comparable to many thrash bandsÆ debut albums, though the
bass is unusually high in the mix.
Area Death Productions have given this release a very loving overhaul,
with plenty of informative liner notes and awesome comic book artwork
featuring their mascot and title character. An entire live set is also
added as bonus tracks, but unfortunately the bandÆs problems manifest
themselves even more in a live situation, as the performance gets
sloppier and more out of tune as it goes along. Even so, Gallinazeous
Death is a prime example of primitive aggression that surely deserves
reappraisal. Squad is still very active, (with a different lineup) and
are now viewed as heroes of the Chilean metal scene, where they have
even had a beer named after them! So drink up, and enjoy the harsh
sounds of this hippie slaying platter.
