From the verdant landscape of Chaco in the northeast of the
country, Ric Niels is another in a long list of successful
Argentinean producers who continue to take the underground dance
scene by storm. With a growing portfolio of music that only saw
a debut in May 2020 via the Orion EP for Clinique Recordings,
further work for ICONYC, MNL and Michael A's Genesis Music, has
seen a raft of original music.
Continuing that trend, a debut for Particles in the shape of
Erised finds Niels developing a glorious dancefloor groove that
pounds relentlessly through heavy beat and sub-bassline. A
strong percussive top line adds to the rhythmic palette before a
sumptuous array of pads and undulating textures wax and wane
throughout. Simultaneously, a glorious analogue arpeggio builds
with increased release envelope and open filtered intensity,
making its mark at the stripped back breakdown before dropping
back into a brooding club floor-filler in the third movement.
Michael Chihaka has been an artist to watch since an early remix
of Aeikus' Juno in September 2019. Since then, the Dubai based
producer has scored two powerful EPs in October 2019 and May
2020 through Nyara and Pinda. These EPs showcased Chihaka's
unique production talent.
Following on from a standout remix of Pole Folder's Serengeti in
July, Chihaka returns to Particles with a typically impressive
reworking of Erised that flows effortlessly with sustained chord
and a deep rolling rhythmic foundation. Taking the essence of
Ric Niels' sound, the arpeggiated sequence so central to the
original, is transformed into a subtle and emotive sequence that
fits elegantly around a new piano motif straight from the UAE
resident's production arsenal. Building in intensity with
snapping snare and white-noise filter, the result is a dramatic
and powerful interpretation full of emotion.
Operating out of the Yerevan capital with its powerful Soviet
architecture, Taode Masihi has begun to carve a niche for
himself through his Teom moniker. With a fanbase that has grown
as a result of DJ sets in his hometown and a May 2020 podcast
for the Hoomidaas Showcase broadcast on British Airways Inflight
Radio, the Armenian has created a stir. A nascent production
career that began with appearances on the 2019 Winter and Spring
Vibes II compilations for Art Vibes Music, additional original
music for Hoomidaas and Up Music have seen Teom craft a
wonderful signature sound.
Now debuting through a scintillating organic house remix, the
central arpeggio of the Erised is transformed into a subtly
meandering backdrop for a chorus of new melodies and
counterpoint phrasing to lilt gently across the eight-minute
piece. A heavy kick drum and subtle percussion keep the array of
shimmering synth lines and glassy keys in check via a remix that
is as innovative as it is an impressive illustration of Teom's
talent.
