Thirteen-year-old rappers Chris "Daddy Mack" Smith and Chris "Mack Daddy"
Kelly became the pop sensations of 1992 as Kris Kross. The two were
discovered at an Atlanta mall in 1991 by then-19-year-old producer Jermaine
Dupri, who took them under his wing and came up with the gimmick of having
the duo wear all of their clothing backwards, lending more significance to
their name. Thanks in part to savvy marketing, "Jump," which sampled the
Jackson 5's "I Want You Back," became the fastest-selling single in 15
years, staying at number one for eight weeks on the Billboard charts and
pushing the sales of their debut album, Totally Krossed Out, past four
million. Another gold single followed in "Warm It Up," and Kris Kross
toured Europe with Michael Jackson and appeared on innumerable
teen-oriented TV shows.
[Kris Kross does cross up your expectationsùand reactions. With producer
Jermaine Dupri, they have developed a sound that combines hard rap rhythms
and textures with bubble-gum pop melodies. Imagine the Jackson 5 as
produced by the Bomb Squad. While the koncept may be kute, the kids sound
anything but innocent as they delineate brutal urban realities on ôItÆs a

"It's a Shame" was the fourth and final single from Totally Krossed Out,
following "Jump", "Warm It Up" and "I Missed the Bus". "It's a Shame"
turned out to be the least successful of the four singles, as it did not
chart on the Billboard Hot 100. However, it did manage to reach number 11
on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart and number 55 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop
Songs chart and number 31 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was written and
produced by Jermaine Dupri. The group performed "It's a Shame" on numerous
television shows such as A Different World.
