Oh mercy me, another release from Keith Fullerton Whitman's
crucial Entschuldigen label and my oh my it's a good one.
There's a story behind it too so let me get that out of the
way. Mr. Whitman lives in a nice wooden house in the suburbs
of Boston, Massachusetts and being the lynchpin of the US
experimental scene that he is, the man has a fair few musical
visitors drop by to his rustic abode. One such visitor was
Geoff Mullen, who popped in to buy some records from Keith's
esteemed Mimaroglu store - a few weeks later at 3am in the
morning Whitman was awakened by a thump at his doorstep, and
lo-and-behold there sitting waiting for his attention was a
demo from Mullen taped to his door. The demo was promptly
filed (as these things are) and forgotten about until one day
Whitman decided to listen to it, and of course as luck would
have it the dusty cdr was the finest demo Whitman had ever
heard. Without further ado he repackaged it in a run of 1000
copies and that's exactly what I'm reviewing here today. There
is clearly a huge debt owed to Christian Fennesz yet Mullen's
work is more creaky, lo-fi and organic, and there's certainly
some kind of influence coming from Whitman's own productions,
notably his Playthroughs release with it's gorgeous swathes of
treated guitar drones. "Thrtysxtrllnmnfstns" is a record of
focus and restraint and the first 'real' release from an
artist that I for one would like to hear a hell of a lot more
from. A stunning work, gorgeous packaging - limited copies!
