"Everything" - the debut album produced by Brazilian legend Arto
Lindsay and harnessing the creative juices of Micah Gaugh, a
Panamanian-born, Texas bred musical genius - channels Tricky,
Prince and Cocteau Twins into some utterly original avant-garde
R'n'B musical soundscapes. Stark pop songs abound, where MicahÆs
soulful vocals are spun with electronic sugar and stripped back
reggae b-lines, and sweet melodies are undershot with background
menace.
Take "Revelation" for example, the first single and a love song
with yearning undertones. Then compare it to "Knitting". In his own
words; "It's a song about how I'd like someone to stop knitting and
pay attention to me. There was this whole craze with my friends
where they were riding on the subway, knitting. I was like please
stop! Braiding your hair is enough!."
The spark that lit "Everything" into a fully-fledged album was
Accidental Records boss Matthew Herbert, who met Gaugh while the
latter was dry-humping a speaker-stack at the Triptych Festival in
Scotland. Herbert was wowed and Micah decided to offer up some of
his more accessible tunes "my avant-pop moments". As such opening
track "Constant" has a gentle, childlike warmth that punctuates the
entire album, layers of rich keys and saxophone building and
weaving in and out of the half spoken, half sung storytelling. ItÆs
an absorbingly spooky trip where nothing is beyond possibility, and
like Matthew Herbert notes; "It's nice to see that whilst the
commercial success of modern black music seems to increasingly
polish out the soul and iron out the ticks, there's six feet men in
kilts out there ready to push a few buttons and see what happens."
As well as "Everything", Gaugh has written an opera called Puppet,
which he performed for three years in New York's Lower East Side,
became famous in Denmark and appeared on the 2004 season premiere
of Sex And The City. Oh, and he's written a novel, is making a
movie and has an art show forthcoming in Miami for his 35 feet x 18
feet abstract paintings which he previously exhibited with the
likes of Futura 2000. ItÆs a never-standing-still approach to life
that is clearly reflected in an intensely adventurous and rewarding
debut album.
